Photograph­y exhibition

A photograph­y exhibition by Paddy Delaney will open in the Tholsel on Wednesday, April 4.

Showcasing some of Paddy’s photograph­s over 25 years, the exhibition by the former New Ross Standard photograph­er is sure to be of interest to people from across the district, offering a window back in time and a chance to reminisce.

New Ross Library events

Looking for a new hobby for spring? Why not drop in to New Ross Library.

Regular events on offer include: Sewing and craftwork every Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Upskill or learn new techniques using various materials. Do you have a ‘cúpla focal’? Would you like to brush up your Irish language skills in a friendly atmosphere? A new comhrá group has started and continues weekly on Wednesday mornings at 12 p.m. A scrabble group meets on Fridays at 3.30 p.m. and new members at any skill level are welcome.

There are a few places still available for Art (for 9 – 12 year olds) with Maeve on Tuesday, April 3, at 2.30 p.m. and for Crafts (for 5 – 8 year olds) with Zdenka on Saturday, April 7, at 3 p.m.

Easter Soccer Camptime

New Ross Town F.C will be running a Easter Soccer Camp in the Good Council College on April 3, April 4 and April 5, starting at 2 p.m. and finishing at 5.30 p.m. each day.

The camp is for boys and girls aged from 5-14.

Music recital in StMary’s

Renowned Irish pianist Finghin Collins will give a recital on Sunday, April 15, at 3.30 p.m on behalf of the Ros Tapestry exhibition with Clodagh Kinsella, award-winning Wexford soprano at St Mary’s Church.

Collins is Artistic Director of New Ross Piano Festival and visits New Ross regularly.

Clodagh Kinsella, who hails from Clonleigh, has just completed her B.A in Vocal Studies in the Royal Irish Academy of Music with a First Class Honours and is now in her first year of a MA.

A table quiz will be held in Corcoran’s Pub Irishtown on Friday evening, April 6, to help fund raise for the Réalt Africa Programme. This is a scheme where volunteer student teachers from Ireland spend their summer in Uganda teaching and assisting local children and schools there.

Jack Byrne, a former Good Counsel Student who hails from Tullogher is volunteeri­ng for the summer coming in Uganda as a teacher in a primary school there. Tables of 4 will cost €20 or €5 per player. Historical Society talk

The next lecture of the New Ross Historical Society will take place on Thursday, April 19, in New Ross Boat Club at 8 p.m. The lecture will be given by Dr Tom Dunne, Emeritus Professor of History, School of History, University College Cork.

Entitled ‘A picture of a Waterford wedding: what is going on in Daniel Maclise’s painting, The Marriage of Strongbow and Eva ?’ the lecture will focus on the marriage of Strongbow and Aoife.

When Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (AKA Strongbow) married Aoife, v eldest daughter of Diarmuit Mac Murchada on August 26, 1171 in Waterford, the course of Irish history would change for next 800 years.

Walking launch guide

The official launch of the New Ross Street Focus free walking guide will take place on April 18 at 7.30 p.m. in St Michael’s Theatre. This is the second print of the guide which outlines the history and heritage hidden in plain street around the streets of New Ross.

IKA’s vintage fundraiser

The Kilkenny Branch of the Irish Kidney Associatio­n’s Big Event is a showcase of trucks, tractors, motorbikes and vintage cars in the Hub, Cillin Hill, Kilkenny on April 8 from midday to 4.30 p.m. Stalls open on the day, Donations graciously accepted. Cookery demonstrat­ion

Following on from the success of its very successful 2017 cookery demo, New Ross Musical Society is hosting another cookery demo with the fabulously-hilarious TV Chef Edward Hayden on Friday, April 6, at 8 p.m. in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross.

Tickets are limited and cost €12. They are available from the Theatre Tavern Bar, committee members, through the society’s Facebook page or by phoning 085-7771116. There will also be a limited number of tickets available to purchase on the door on the night on a first come, first served basis. This is guaranteed to be a great night out.

History talk in Graigue

The next Graiguenam­anagh Historical Society Talk will be held on Friday, April 13, in the Library at 8 pm. The speaker will be local historian Colm Walsh who is the co-author of three books on Graiguenam­anagh.

The name of the talk is ‘A History of the Roads around Graiguenam­anagh’. Colm’s talk will give an account of the developmen­t of the roads around Graiguenam­anagh. The talk will trace how the road system around the town changed over the years, how some roads fell out of use and others remain in use to this day even though replaced by newer roads. This is a great opportunit­y to learn about the local roads from the Ballogan road to Batchellor­s Walk and the Bianconi Coach roads. The talk will be illustrate­d by various original maps. All are welcome to this interestin­g and informativ­e talk.

First Aid training

The New Ross Chamber of Commerce in associatio­n with Silver Ferns First Aid and Safety Training is running a three day first aid response training course.

This course is open to anyone wanting to learn how to recognise and care for people with life-threatenin­g injuries before the arrival of healthcare practition­ers.

The course takes place on Wednesday, April 25, Tuesday, May 1 and Tuesday May 8 in the conference room of the Rising Tide Business Centre, 35 South Street, New Ross from 9.30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost is €265 for chamber members and €280 for non members.

First Aid Response training is replacing Occupation­al First Aid as a new training standard. Participan­ts will receive a certificat­e which will be valid for two years. Booking is essential. Free energy workshop

New Ross Chamber of Commerce and Energia is running an energy reduction workshop. This free half day workshop will help businesses develop an action plan to save money and to reduce energy bills.

The course will take place on April 17 in the conference room at the Rising Tide Business Centre, 35 South Street between 9.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and it is free. The course will help participan­ts that understand­ing and managing their electricit­y usage and bills are the key to achieving improvemen­ts and savings. Booking is essential.

Darts exhibition

New Ross Special Olympics Club would like to thank Tom Bradley for organising the darts exhibition with guest Richie Burnett and for donating the proceeds to the club.

Thanks were also extended to Brendan Grace of the Parish Pump, sponsors, participan­ts and all other supporters on the night.
