Wexford pipped by point despite fine defending

CARLOW WEXFORD 1-6 2-2

A CRACKING match between the Wexford ‘seconds’ and Carlow in the Leinster Under-16 ‘B’ camogie championship ended in the narrowest of defeats for the visitors in Fenagh.

On a beautiful day for a game, both sides left it all on the pitch in search of the win, but it was the hosts who managed to nab the narrowest of successes, their second of the provincial championship so far.

For Wexford, that’s two hardfought losses in a row, but there have been plenty of positives to take from the performances.

Eimear Goland made a number of impressive saves between the posts for her county, while Donna Delahunty was a constant thorn in the Carlow defence.

However, it was the play of the exceptional Maria O’Dowd that really stood out.

The Wexford full-back was in unbeatable form at the heart of the defence and repelled most of what Carlow threw at her.

The Slaneysiders actually led at the break. Abbie Dagg scored two superb goals, both beautiful strikes of the ball that flew into the top corner of the Carlow net.

Katie Codd also notched a point to help Wexford into a 2-1 to 1-3 interval advantage.

While the visiting defence was excellent after the break, giving up just three points, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to cement a Wexford victory.

Despite working hard in the heat, they had just a Delahunty point to show for the efforts as Carlow prevailed with a gritty performance.

Next up for Wexford was another spin up the province, this time up the road to Kildare yesterday (Monday) to take on the Lilywhites.

The girls in purple and gold were hoping to end the round-robin campaign with a morale-boosting win and another good performance.
