1 WIZARD OF OZ THE MUSICAL: The people of Wexford are being encouraged to follow the yellow brick road to Gorey Little Theatre to see this year’s musical performance of Wizard of Oz. Gorey Musical Society’s production of Wizard of Oz will take to the stage on Tuesday, April 10, until Saturday, April 14, at 8 p.m. There will be a matinee performance at 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 14. This story has delighted audiences since its release in 1939 and it is one not to be missed. Priority booking for sponsors, patrons and members takes place from 2 p.m., until 5 p.m., on Tuesday, April 3, in Gorey Little Theatre and bookings are then opened daily to the public afterwards from 2 p.m., until 5 p.m. For more information call Gorey Little Theatre on 053 94 21474.
2 A LAUGH FOR HOPE & HOSPICE: The annual Laugh for Hope & Hospice kicks off it’s mini tour of Co Wexford venues this week with a show in the Millennium Bar in Davidstown on Saturday night (April 7) at 9.30 p.m. The fundraiser has been going since 2012 and has raised over €42,000 which has been divided equally among both charities. A number of groups get involved such as Newbawn/Adamstown Variety Group, Camross Boys and Marshalstown Drama Group and a great evening of laughter and music is guaranteed. The tour will hit Mernagh’s Oylegate the following week, followed by the IFA Centre in Enniscorthy and The Horse & Hound in Ballinaboola.
3 LOCH GARMAN YOUTH BAND CONCERT: Having recently opened the 4th County Wexford Youth Orchestra Festival in the National Opera House with their performance of Queens Bohemian Rhapsody, the Loch Garman Youth Band under musical director John Clancy will perform in Clonard Church on Sunday April 8 at 11.30am Mass.The selected programme will include music by Chatpentier, O’ Riada, Clarke and Karl Jenkins. Benedictus from The Mass for Peace by Jenkins will feature soloists Karen Roche (Euphonium) and Caoimhe O Sullivan (Flugel Horn). The Youth Band was established to provide an opportunity for young people to become proficient in brass playing. Anyone interested can contact info@lochgarmanband.com.
4 COOKERY DEMONSTRATION WITH EDWARD HAYDEN: New Ross Musical Society is hosting a fun-filled cookery demo on Friday, April 6 at 8 p.m. The demonstration will be given by TV chef Edward Hayden. The demo will take place in the Brandon House Hotel. Tickets are €12 and can be bought from the Theatre Tavern, committee members, through the society’s Facebook page or by phoning 085-7771116. There will also be a limited number of tickets on the door.
5 DECLAN O’ROURKE: Greenacres will play host to highly successful Irish singersongwriter, Declan O’Rourke on April 7 at 8.30 p.m. Presented by local promoters Lantern, O’Rourke’s songwriting style moves faultlessly between impressionism and story telling. He is comfortable playing solo or frontign a 50-piece orchestra. His soulful music, rooted in folk and trad, has attracted praise from countless industry giants including John Prine, Paul Weller and others. His music has been covered by artists including Christy Moore, Eddi Reader and Josh Groban. Tickets are €23 and are available from www.lantern.ie.
6 GALA CONCERT: A special concert to raise funds for the restoration of the historic church organ at St Mary’s Church, Enniscorthy, will take place there this Sunday, April 8, at 7.30 p.m. The show features some of Wexford’s best loved entertainers including Lorna Mahon, Ciara Cullinane, George Lawlor, the Castlebridge Community Singers, Eric Hayes, Marie and Colm O’Tiarnaigh, Des Whelan, Clodagh and Stephanie Kinsella and the Enniscorthy Strings Group. Tickets are priced at €10 and are available from a number of local outlets including the Parish Office at St Aidan’s Cathedral.
7 IN BETWEEN: This year’s Amnesty International Wexford film screening, which takes place at the National Opera House on April 10 at 8 p.m., will be the Israeli-French film, ‘In Between’, directed by Maysaloun Hamoud. An empowering tale of three Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv, the film focuses on flatmates Laila and Salma, whose respective lifestyles clash with new flatmate Nour, who lives an ultraconservative Muslim lifestyle.
