WORK UNDER WAY ON MAIN SPAN OF BARROW BRIDGE

- BY DAVID LOOBY

WORK has begun on the main span of the Barrow Bridge starting with travellers being erected to facilitate the construction works.

A BAM Iridium spokesperson said: ‘ The River Barrow Bridge is progressing with three sections of the deck poured on the west side of the River Barrow and the support falsework being erected on the east side of the river.’

The first pour was expected towards the end of March. The travellers, which are bespoke designed falsework, are being erected at Pier 4 and on the west side of the river and will support the falsework for pouring the deck.

‘ They will “creep” along pouring the deck itself from previously poured sections.’

Earthworks are moving towards the final stages in many areas of the project, with drainage being installed, stabilisation started and cement bound granular mixture (CBGM) about to start in earnest. Work is continuing on the deck construction west of the river, while pier construction is nearing completion. Formwork erection for the deck east of river is being carried out.

Most of the local roads that cross the route have had the structures installed with traffic now passing through in the next few weeks. ‘We will be putting final surfaces on the roads, installing safety barriers and signage,’ the spokesperson said. The structures at Ballyverneen are on course for completion in the third quarter of 2018. Traffic management is in place in numerous locations from N25 at Glenmore all the way through to Corcoran’s Cross (N30). Two bridges in Ballyverneen and finishing works to bridges across the 14km site are under way. Accommodation works for landowners. earthworks: drainage, cut and fill operations, stabilisation and topsoiling works are all being carried out.
