Glasswallsofferenhanced viewsoftheRiverBarrow

THE new glass flood wall along the Quay has enhanced the views along the River Barrow.

The New Ross flood defence scheme which cost in the region of €2 million involved approximately a 3km stretch of flood defence walls along the Quays and an embankment in Rosbercon.

Engineer Abraham Dunne said that there is a 80metre glass flood wall at the New Ross Marina and a further section at the back of the John F Kennedy monument along the boardwalk.

Mr Dunne said the glass walls have been installed over the past three months and were the final stages of the flood defence scheme.

‘We purposely chose glass for certain sections of the scheme to give clear and open views of the River Barrow.’

Adjoining the glass wall at the Kennedy monument is a beautiful handcrafted stone curved wall sweeping along the corner of the O’Hanrahan Bridge which was erected by Martin Codd of Rathnure. The railings along the wall were erected by Ger Kielty of Ballyanne.

Mr Dunne said that the new flood defence works run from the oil tanks to the bridge and then from the Galley to Rodger’s dentist and from Marshmeadows to the Brandon and also include works at Rosbercon.

In certain areas the older flood walls wee increased in length and heightened to improve defences.

Mr Dunne said the new works appear to be working pointing out that the last storm tide occurred three months ago and had the new defence works not been in place Marshmeadows and Rosbercon would have been flooded.

He said the flood defence works which were carried out by MJS Civil Engineering are now fully completed bar a snag list and are done to an extremely high standard.

He said features like the glass walls and the curved stone wall are a great addition to the scheme and enhance the appearance of the town.
