NEW ROSS LADIES

Wednesday week’s competition was sponsored by Blossoms Boutique, followed by a fashion show. There was a great turn-out and fun was had by all.

Thank you to our team of models who gave their time to display the stunning outfits. Thank you to Margaret, our sponsor, who gave a descriptive run of the show, and to Rose who struggled to get us on the catwalk (!) on time.

Results: 1, Liz Bennett (9), 37 points; 2, Tess Ryan (24), 36 points; 3, Adeline Foxe (25), 35 points (last nine).

The new Get into Golf group registration and information evening took place in the clubhouse, hosted by Anne Healy who initiated this great programme for beginners. We had a fantastic attendance of 20 new ladies who are all set to take to the fairways.

It was a huge success last year and we are delighted to welcome all our new members to our club. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on the registration night.

Wednesday, April 25, will be 18-hole stroke medal sponsored by Glanbia. Please note the change in your fixture diary.

Don’t forget, the Tuesday evening fourball is open to us ladies also.

Online booking is now open for our ladies’ open ‘Play in Pink’ day on Wednesday, May 30, which is an open fourball in aid of National Breast Cancer Research Institute. Please invite your friends!

NEW ROSS SENIORS

After a misty start, the day brightened up and the 14 competing teams enjoyed a rather pleasant day for a change devoid of the need for wearing bulky raingear.

Once again, the scoring statistics were rather impressive with only four points separating the first three teams home, with the team which finished second disqualified for incorrect scores on their card.

The greens coming back to their usual best was where the game was won and lost, with some players enjoying a rich return on them. Underfoot conditions were improving too and at last we hope to get some seasonal weather in which to enjoy our weekly outing which we eagerly look forward to.

A terrific outward nine by the winners, when they clocked up 54 points, set them on the high road to victory. Adding 44 points on the back nine gave Tommy Tyler (16), Pat Traynor (18), Kenny Irwin (22) and Martin Burke (26) a final winning total of 98 points.

Second on 95 points were Dick Cuddihy (15), Eddie Morrissey (17), Martin Forristal (20) and Jim Kehoe (25). A point behind on 94 came John Kennedy (16), Liam Glasheen (20), Billy Redmond (21) and Tom Kent (26) to claim the third spot.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Liam Glasheen on the ninth hole and Richie Aylward on the eleventh.

A gentle reminder to all our members that the draw for teams is at 9.45 a.m., and all should be in-house well prior to that cut-off time.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

The competition sponsored by Creane and Creane was called off on Tuesday as the course was closed due to heavy overnight rain. This competition will be played at a later date.

On Thursday, after a damp start, our Seniors’ competition was played. As the day progressed the sun was shining on the fairways. This was a club-sponsored competition.

DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Golf Society played Quinnagh House on Sunday.

Results: 1, Charlie O’Brien, 35 points; 2, Sam Farnan, 35 points; 3, Martin Collins, 34 points. Martin also took home the birdie money.

The winning yellow ball team featured Anto Kelly, Sam Farnan and John Cahill.

All money owed for the weekend away is to be in by next Sunday when the venue is Carrigleade. Please be there by 8.45 a.m.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday, April 11, nine-hole competition: 1, Sammy Walker (8), 21 points; 2, Anthony Fortune (14), 20 points.

Weekend singles stableford (mixed): 1, Richard McDonald (10), 39 points; 2, Troy Kenny (18), 38 points; 3, Brian Hayes (17), 37 points.

Despite having summer conditions to play in on Sunday afternoon, the reigning champions of the Provincial Towns Cup, Enniscorthy, proved too strong for a gallant Ballymoney team. Best of luck to Enniscorthy in the next round.

COURTOWN

Having got through the previous weekend when we played some inter-club matches and our regular club competitions, we might have been forgiven for thinking that we might have just turned the corner weather-wise, but, alas, the weather gods conspired against us and the course had to be closed again.

As a result, there was no ladies’ competition on Tuesday and nothing for the gents either on Wednesday. There was a big improvement after that and the course was re-opened on Thursday, and we were able to play golf over the weekend.

It has been another good week for our inter-club teams. Our Duggan Cup team beat Blainroe on Saturday, and on the same day our J.B. Carr had a win over Rosslare.

Our Irish mixed foursomes team will take on Rosslare next weekend. Once again we wish them all well as they go out to represent our club.

Singles, Sunday, April 15: 1, Kevin Ivers (25), 33 points; 2, Ollie Quigley (13), 31 points; 3, Barry Doyle (15), 29 points (last nine).

Ladies’ and gents’ singles, Saturday, April 21: 1, Paul Dobey (20), 36 points; 2, Michael O’Shaughnessy (22), 35 points (last six); 3, Niall Brady (21), 35 points (last nine); gross, Paddy Donohoe (6), 30 points; ladies, Denise Kavanagh (12), 32 points (last nine).

TAGHMON SOCIETY

The Society recently went on what is becoming an annual treat when we played one of the best courses in the country, the magnificent Druids Glen. Some of the 55 golfers did it justice and the rest should have stayed at home!

Results: 1, Jim O’Keeffe (18), 39; 2, Rhian Clarke (18), 38; 3, Noel Kendrick (14), 37; Cat. 1, Nicholas Cousins (13), 36; Cat. 2, Mark Furlong (21), 36; Cat. 3, Paddy Banville (27), 32; front nine, Tom O’Gorman, 20; back nine, Craig Barnes, 23; nearest the pin: eighth, Robin Rowe, 43”; 17th, Kevin Cardiff, 68”.

There were four winners of the twos club - David Curtin, Joe Kelly, Jimmy O’Leary and John Walsh - who received €25 each.

We are heading for The Heritage Golf Resort in September for a long overdue weekend away. Deposits or full payments will be collected at the next outing. There are a limited number of places, so book early to avoid disappointment.

The new society tee-shirts and half tops will also be available for those that ordered them.

We sent a team of four up to Greystones to represent us in the annual Kilmacud scramble, and they did us proud by finishing three under and coming second. Team members were Tony Kelly, Jim O’Keeffe, Seamus and Jason McLoughlin.

The next outing is in Waterford G.C. on April 28, starting at 10.30 a.m. As usual, let a committee member know whether you are playing or not. Bring along a friend as a visitor.

ROSSLARE

Rosslare had mixed fortunes during the past week on the inter-club scene.

The Barton Cup team had a great win over near neighbours Wexford. Rosslare had two games at home and won both, with Michael Kearns and Dermot Walsh winning on the 20th and Ken Maher and Brian Hall-O’Mahony getting home on the 15th.

Jim Cullimore and Ciarán Cuddihy, and Kevin Foran and Joe Moran, both lost in Wexford, and, in the deciding , John Barron and Mark O’Connor came from behind to win on the 20th.

They now play New Ross. Vinnie O’Reilly and Dan Cash were the managers.

The J.B. Carr team lost heavily to Courtown in Woodenbridge. The team was Robin Gardner and Hugh Byrne, Dan Cash and Jim Anglim, Vinnie O’Reilly and Ned Kinsella, Kevin Foran and Eamonn Mullan, and John Hanrick.

Saturday, April 14, fourball: 1, Derek Evans (10), Boyd Scott (15), 43 points; 2, Michael Geraghty (11), Andrew Roche (16), 43 points; 3, John Long (9), Davy Noonan (9), 42 points; 4, J. Galvin (8), J.J. Byrne (19), 41 points.

Sunday, April 15, singles: 1, P.J. Doyle (5), 75; 2, John Barron (7), 82.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Due to the poor weather conditions last Tuesday, the planned strokes T.T.T. (G.O.Y./medal) sponsored by Selskar Bookshop was postponed to today (April 24). Hopefully the weather will co-operate!

Mount Juliet won the match against Rosslare’s Intermediate team in Carrick-on-Suir on Sunday. Despite our team playing well, Mount Juliet provided very strong opposition and were deserving winners. We wish them good luck in the next round.

The Challenge Cup team play Athy in Borris on April 29. Managers Doreen McGovern and Catherine Haugh would love the support of the lady members, and we wish the team the best of luck.

Wednesday, April 11, open singles stableford: Stephanie Glynn (29), 41 points.

Saturday, April 14, open fourball: 1, Moira Fortune (15/14) and Liz Murphy (23/21), 40 points; 2, Kathleen Cullimore (17/15) and Rosemary Spelman (25/23), 38 points.

The first of the season’s classics kicks off on Friday, April 27, hosted by Enniscorthy Chamber Of Commerce.
