Ring of success in student quiz
THE FERRYCARRIG Hotel provided the venue last week for the County Under-14 Community Games table quiz final which proved to be a closely contested event.
The quiz was held on Tuesday night and 19 teams participated representing different areas around the county, including Taghmon, Ring of Hook, Piercestown-Murrintown, CastlebridgeCrossabeg, Glynn-Barntown and BBBCR (Ballygarrett, Ballycanew, Ballyoughter, Camolin and Riverchapel).
They were competing for the honour of representing their county in the national finals which will take place in University of Limerick next month.
It was a great night for everyone involved and the organisers complimented the teams for the high standard they set. They noted the very impressive level of answering which was highlighted by the fact that after 10 rounds of 10 questions the average points score was in the mid-70s.
The Question Master was Jim Doyle and Wexford Community Games expressed thanks to him for compiling tough but fair questions for the participants.
A spokesperson for the organisers also expressed gratitude to the people who offered to mark the papers, keep score, and those who acted as stewards.
At the head of the pack were the teams from the Ring of Hook and Piercestown-Murrintown who were neck-and-neck throughout; just three points separated these two very strong teams in the end.
The Ring of Hook students came first with a total of 90 points while Piercestown-Murrintown came a very close second with 87.
As County Champions the Hook team will now represent Wexford against the top teams from other counties in next month’s national final.
Such was the competitive nature of the competition that the third placed team, Bree-Davidstown, scored an impressive 82 points, while the team who came fourth, Castlebridge/Crossabeg, was only one point behind with 81.
It was an historic win for the Ring of Hook team as it was the first time they secured victory and the significance of that fact was highlighted by the excitement the members displayed when their win was announced.
The team was composed of Sophie Doyle, Molly Lynch, Dan Nolan and Aoife O’Connor. The runners-up team. who were County Champions in 2017, was composed this year of Roisin Alouf, Hayley Case, Caoimhe Delahunty, James Hegarty and Mary Roe. The Bree-Davidstown area was represented by Aoibhe Donegan, Lara Donegan, Orlaith Flynn, Jarlath Kelly, Adam Twomey and Sam Twomey.
