First time ever swim championship has live broadcast on Youtube
THE 2018 Irish Open Swimming Championships took place recently and saw Ireland’s top swimmers in action in the Apex pool in New Ross where their swims were broadcasted live on Youtube.
Brendan Hyland and Jordan Sloan added their names to the growing list of swimmers making consideration times for the European Championships joining Darragh Greene, Shane Ryan, Mona McSharry and Conor Ferguson for the event.
Mona McSharry broke her own 50m freestyle record at the competition in what was a memorable day for local swimmers. Four New Ross swimmers secured entry times for this prestigous event. These included first time qualifier Min Allen who competed during the first two days swimming well.
There was also a first time qualification for Sadhbh Bailey competing over four days, reaching junior B finals in most of her events.
Cian Foley joined the group on Saturday, ending his day with a solid swim in the 1500, while Denis Kilbride competed over all five days of competition, reaching the finals in all of his events, securing his first bronze in an open in the 1500 free in the process – a superb result for the young Rower man.
This was the first time the finals were live streamed on Youtube and New Ross Olympian Grainne Murphy provided commentary over the duration of the competition. Fellow New Ross Olympian Adrain (Zorro) O’Connor also attended some of the events providing support to the team and his niece Sadhbh Bailey.
Sadhbh is a St Mary’s Secondary School student and Min attends Our Lady of Lourdes. They have also been selected onto the Leinster Schools Interprovisional team where they competed against the other provinces in the National Acquatic Centre recently. The club will host a fundraising 5 and 10 K walk and run in the John F Kennedy Arboreteum (Kennedy Park) over the June Bank Holiday on Monday, June 4, starting at 11.30 a.m. Funds will help secure additional pool time for the club’s young athletes and your support on the day is much appreciated by the club.
