NEW ROSS LADIES

Vice-Captain Marguerite writes: ‘I can’t even express how we all feel with the sad passing of our friend and a past Captain, Pat Rowsome.

‘Pat was a very open-hearted person and her kindness and support to others never fell short. She brought so much joy and fun to those around her.

‘She loved sport and was a great hockey and camogie player before she took up golf, so it came naturally to her. She was a true Wexford woman and we had many fun nights in the clubhouse dressed in the Wexford jerseys and with Pat giving us a blast of Boolavogue. Those special memories of her will always make us smile.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Declan and children Johanna, Eileen, Edel, Patrick and Liam. ‘A beautiful soul is never forgotten.’

When it’s breezy, hit it easy, that’s definitely what Adeline Foxe did recently. Wow, 45 points, what a score under very tough conditions. Well done Adeline, there is no stop in you.

Valerie Doyle qualifier, 18-hole stableford, sponsored by Allied Irish Bank, New Ross - Cat. 1: 1, Eileen Cullinan (16), 32 points; 2, Liz Bennett (9), 30 points; Cat. 2: 1, Adeline Foxe (25), 45 points; 2, Mary J. Maher (28), 33 points; Cat. 3: 1, Rita Furlong (33), 30 points; 2, Anne O’Grady (29), 30 points.

Hard luck to the Mary McKenna team which lost to Carlow. We will live to fight another day girls. Thank you to those who travelled to support us.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

The persistent rain failed to dampen our outing to Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club on Tuesday.

True, it was a bit uncomfortable with the rain gear on but with the course in immaculate condition we defied the elements, and the nine teams all enjoyed their game by the banks of the Slaney.

Once again, even on a strange course, these Seniors brought in some great scores in our champagne scramble format, with two best scores on holes 1-18 and play your own ball on all par threes.

Taking the honours and the bragging rights with a terrific score of 92 points considering the conditions were Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Mikey Lee (19), Larry Shannon (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24).

Second place went to Andy Ronan (15), Dan Quigley (20), Les Jastrebski (25) and Aidan Wallace (27) with 91 points. Third on 85 points were the three-person team of Ray Shannon (14), Martin Forristal (20) and Martin Burke (26).

Fourth spot went to Tony Harford (13), Michael Gannon (18), Liam Glasheen (20) and Mick Long (21) with 82 points, and placed fifth were Tommy Ryan (15), Tony Redmond (17), Paddy Mahony (19) and Donie Cody (23) with 81 points.

Many thanks to Caroline Dunne at Bunclody for her gracious welcome in the Pro Shop, and plaudits as well to the restaurant for their outstanding menu after golf - it was much appreciated by our travelling contingent.

Back on home soil on Thursday, we enjoyed the sunshine and the much-improved underfoot conditions. Newly-mowed greens that morning left a bit of getting used to, but once again the scoring returns were excellent and twelve teams thoroughly enjoyed their round without even a drop of rain.

The ultra-consistent Tony Harford (13), and his three compatriots, Dan Quigley (20), Seán O hUginn (21), and Tony Sexton (22), brought in 91 points to emerge winners.

Placed second on 90 points were Ray Shannon (14), Willie Whitty (17), Tom Kent (26) and Martin Burke (26). With 89 points and in third place came Denis Kirwan (14), Tom Murphy (16), Willie Kelly (18) and Oliver Brennan (27)

We extend the sincere sympathy of the Seniors group to Declan Rowsome and family on the recent death of his beloved wife, Pat. She is fondly remembered as a past ladies’ Captain, a role she filled with utter dedication, and all of us who came into contact with her over the years have fond memories of a real lady in every sense of the word - now may her gentle soul rest in peace.

We have no outings next Thursday, May 3, as it is an open waltz format club competition. There is no game on Thursday, May 10, either as it is The Rower-Inistioge classic.

Our next away outing is to Coollattin on Tuesday, May 15. Anyone not booked in and intending to travel, please text Jamesie Murphy on 085-1846172 or e-mail jamesiemurphy@gmail.com as soon as possible to allow teams and tee-times to be in the local papers on Tuesday, May 8.

All those booked in can pay the all-in fee of €25 to Tony Harford or Jamesie Murphy next Thursday, May 3.
