Perfect 10 for popular race

- By ANNA HAYES

THE TENTH Pettitt’s Supervalu Wexford Half Marathon and 10km proved to be a wonderful celebration as almost 2,000 people donned their runners for the popular race.

The race reached total capacity on February 4, with 1,900 entries. This year, the race makes up part of a trilogy of ten-year-old races, along with the Clontarf Half Marathon and the Wicklow Gaol Break Half Marathon, and a special three-part medal, designed by Wexford Race Director Eoin Ryan was created especially for the occasion.

The race generally takes in Johnstown Caste but this year, due to construction works at that site, the runners were brought out to Murrintown village and back up Hodge’s Mill before rejoining the regular route back to Wexford town.

Eoin said: ‘It was a slight variation on our usual course and it was slightly more challenging because the hill into Murrintwon is quite a pull. But we were delighted with the event, it was another great success with plenty of people staying in Wexford for the night after it.’

He added that one man from Exeter in the UK had flown over for the Wicklow and Wexford races and would do the same for the Clontarf race in order to complete the trilogy of medals for this year.

He expressed his thanks to all those who had supported the race in anyway, especially the DMP Athletic Club, the Gardai, Wexford County Council, the National Learning Network and the 2nd Wexford Scouts group. The results are as follows: Half Marathon Men: 1. Myles Gibbons, 2. Karl Mannion, 3. Brendan Lyng.

Half Marathon Women: 1. Niamh O’Brien, 2. Lynne Duffy, 3. Deborah Monaghan.

10km Men: 1. Niall Sheil, 2. Iosif Guther, 3. Paul Gibbons.

10km Women: 1. Sandra Young, 2. Fiona Kenna, 3. Mary Kelly.
