DARKNESS INTO LIGHT WALKS. Up to 10,000 people across Wexford will take part in four Darkness Into Light walks at 4.15 a.m. on May 12 in aid of Pieta House which provides a free, therapeuti­c approach to people who are in suicide distress and to those who engage in self-harm. The walks will take place in Wexford town, New Ross, Courtown and Enniscorth­y. Wexford walks will meet at St Joseph’s Community Centre while those taking part in Enniscorth­y will meet at the Bellefield GAA complex. Those taking part in Courtown will meet at Flanagan’s Wharf while the New Ross participan­ts will meet at the Apex. All walks will take in a 5km route around the various towns before returning to the starting locations. This year there is no registrati­on facilities at the event and anyone wishing to register must do so online at www.dil.pieta.ie. Those taking part in the walks are asked to arrive at their respective venues up to 30 minutes in advance of the walk start time. Anyone can take part in the walk and you can do it at your own pace.

A DATE WITH DORIS: Local West End star Aileen Donohoe will take audiences on a sentimenta­l journey spanning 30 years of Doris Day’s career, celebratin­g the Hollywood sweetheart. The nostalgic onewoman show features classic songs such as ‘On Moonlight Bay’, ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’, ‘Que Sera Sera’ and a number of hits from ‘Calamity Jane’. Aileen’s West End credits include ‘Wicked’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Closer to home, she has starred in ‘Evita’, ‘Chess’ and ‘9 to 5’ with Wexford Light Opera Society. The show runs at the National Opera House on May 10 and 11. COUNTY FLEADH Everyone is welcome to come and listen to great Irish music at the County Fleadh which takes place in Carrig on Bannow this Sunday, preceded by a celebratio­n of Irish music concert this Friday night at the village hall at 9 p.m. Several hundred people are due to descend on the village for the Irish music competitio­n, which takes place at Danescatle NS and in Carrig on Bannow Hall from 9.30 a.m. Competitor­s from across County Wexford will be competing to qualify for the regional finals.

SOUND AND FUREY: Irish folk legend, Finbar Furey, will be performing in Wexford Opera House on Friday, May 11, at 8 pm. An icon of the Irish music scene for over four decades he has always been at the forefront of musical experiment­ation and his solo career has seen him expand into film and TV - both as a musician and as an actor. The Opera House concert will form part of his tour to promote his latest album, ‘Paddy Dear’ which topped the Irish charts last year.

NORTH WEXFORD HOSPICE NURSING TRUST BARBECUE: The North Wexford Hospice Nursing Trust are set to cook up a storm at their annual fundraisin­g barbecue on Saturday, May 12, from 8.30 p.m., until 10.30 p.m., in The Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey. Tickets are €25 with valuable door prizes to be won. They are available from James Tomkins Suzuki Garage, or call 086 2604097. Singer Tina Carter will take to the stage at 8.30 p.m., followed by more musical entertainm­ent from Theresa and the Stars who will play from 10.30 p.m., until late. This delicious steak supper is sure to be a sell-out.

JMA: After a sold out show in Wexford Arts Centre in December local rock band, JMA, will be bringing their tribute show to music legends Bob Dylan and Neil Young to the Presentati­on Centre in Enniscorth­y on Friday, May 11, at 8 pm. The stunning show pays homage to the two rock icons who are also very influentia­l on the members of JMA. The set list will feature some of the biggest hits recorded by both artists and some choice album tracks to keep all discerning fans happy. The set will include ‘Like a Rolling Stone’, Baby Please Stop Crying’, ‘Cortez the Killer’ ‘Hey, Hey, My, My’ and ‘Needle and the Damage Done.

MUSICI IRELAND: Wexford-based ensemble Musici Ireland will perform at St Peter’s Church, Kilmore Quay on May 13 at 4 p.m. drawing from the repertoire of Brahms, Mozart and local composer Liam Bates. Both Mozart and Brahms admired the tone and range of the clarinet. Liam Bates’ ‘Vivo’ displays an energy that springs directly from its syncopated rhythmic patterns and sequences which are influenced by 1970s and 1980s jazz/funk and funk/disco. The participat­ing musicians are: Conor Sheil (clarinet), Mia Cooper and Siun Milne (violin), Beth McNinch (viola), and Katie Tertell (cello). Tickets are €17/14/5 on the door.
