FÉILE CHAMPIONS

The Division 1 Féile hurling final took place last weekend in Ferns Centre of Excellence where our under-14 Hurlers took on Shelmaliers. After a nervous start, scores from Adam O’Grady, Eoin Whelan, Morgan Ellis and Seán Nunan saw them lead by six points at the break as the Fethard defence held Shelmaliers to a single point.

Shels upped their game in the second half and two quick points from frees reduced the lead to four. However, a driving run from centre back from the impressive Eoin Whelan lifted the siege and brought the ball to the Shels 21-yard line. While the chance looked to have gone the ball broke to Eoin again and he finished to the net. Further points from Eoin and Adam extended the lead to eight points. Great defensive work kept Shelmaliers at bay though they did strike for a late consolation goal as Fethard won on a 1-9 to 1-4 scoreline to become the first team from the club to win a Division 1 Féile Hurling final.

The National Féile na nGael competition will take place in Galway on the June 8 to June 10 and we wish the players and their mentors the best of luck. Our Féile Footballers are also through to the Division 1 Final where the played Ballinstragh Gaels last Sunday in Ferns, full report in next week’s paper.
