‘Oar’some start to rowing season in St Kearns
THE coastal rowing season got off to an exciting start on May Bank Holiday Monday when St Kearns Rowing Club held a ‘ try rowing/coffee morning’ at St Kearns.
A large crowd attended enjoying the experience in pleasant weather. Club spokesperson Helen Mason said: ‘We were delighted to see so many people interested and three generations of some families giving it a go. Rowing is a great strength and resistance exercise; is very social as it is a team sport and combined with fresh salt air and wellbeing from being by the sea; it ticks all the boxes!’
Club members range in age from 10 years to over 70. Membership is €25 per child, €55 per adult and €65 per family.
‘You don’t need to be a swimmer as life jackets are provided and must be worn in the boat. An old pair of runners and sports gear is the only equipment you need.’
The club train at 7 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (weather permitting) and have a leisure row on Sundays for adults only. ‘We take part in local regattas with five other Wexford based rowing clubs which make up the Slaney Association. Some members travel to London each year for the Great River Race and take part in other coastal events here in Ireland and abroad.’
