BOBBY KENNEDY’S DAUGHTER TO OPEN SUMMER SCHOOL
FIFTY years on from the assassination of her father Senator Bobby Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy has been announced as the person opening this year’s Kennedy Summer School.
Senator Kennedy was killed on June 5, 1968, and in her latest book, Robert F Kennedy: Ripples of Hope, his daughter pays homage to her father’s life and legacy. She will discuss the book on the opening day of the festival, which runs from Thursday, September 6, to Saturday, September 8, in St Michael’s Theatre and at local venues, with an extended programme of speakers this year, including Irish sports celebrities. Among the many other speakers are Brian Cowen, Phil Hogan and Miriam O’Callaghan.
Kerry is the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Since 1981, she has worked on diverse human rights issues including child labour, disappearances, indigenous land rights, judicial independence, freedom of expression, ethnic violence, impunity, women’s rights and the environment. She founded RFK Compass, which convenes biannual meetings of institutional investors who collectively control $5 to $7 trillion in assets to address the impact of human rights violations on investment outcomes.
