Campile road needs to be more attractive
THE new entrance road into New Ross, along the Campile road and Marshmeadows will be made more attractive under new council plans.
Martina Donoghue of the housing section said the new entrance to the halting site is at design stage.
Ms Donoghue said: ‘ There is some work to be done mapping out the site. We’ll have to take out some of the ditches. The works will take a month and will hopefully be completed by September.’
Cllr Larry O’Brien said only Travellers from the New Ross district should be accommodated in the site, which was seconded by Cllr Michael Sheehan.
Cllr O’Brien welcomed the plans for the halting site entrance, adding that last Christmas he was asked if Traveller families from Wexford could be accommodated temporarily in Marshmeadows.
District director Eamonn Hore said the halting site was never meant to be a permanent solution, Cllr Sheehan adding: ‘We were going to strategically wind it down, but that plan has changed in the last couple of years.’
Cllr O’Brien said the Campile road will soon be the main road into New Ross once the bypass opens in around nine months time.
He said there once was ‘a lovely, long lay-by’ along the road.
Mr Hore agreed, saying: ‘It’s a really nice road from Stokestown in, other than the final stretch, which is a bit of a stark area. All of the company sites need a bit of planting with respect to the hauliers.’
Cathaoirleach Cllr Willie Fitzharris said he is confident they won’t be opposed to improving how the front of the premises look.
He said: ‘I don’t think it’s good planning when elected members are getting phone calls at Christmas (about housing Traveller families). I think we need a meeting.’
‘We will help them with providing planting,’ Mr Hore said.
