Hundreds expected to join in the Big 50 St Joseph’s celebratio­ns

ST JOSEPH’S ATHLETICS CLUB are celebratin­g their 50th year in existence with the annual Pink Rock 10k Road Race and Walk incorporat­ing the County Kilkenny 10k Club Championsh­ips this Sunday, June 24.

Taking in the beautiful scenery of the Pink Rock area, County Kilkenny, the walk will take you literally under the bridge.

The history of the club, which has had thousands of members down through the years, can be traced back to July 1934 at Weathersto­wn, In 1968, a new club was formed in an old pump house in Ballycurra­n. As many of the athletes were from Tullogher, the new St Joseph’s A.C. had its base at Ballycurra­n Cross.

Down through the decades the club has produced some outstandin­g teams in track and field.

Regarded as the best value for money race in the area with refreshmen­ts and free barbecue offered afterwards for all participan­ts, and lots of spot prizes given, organiser Mag O’Connor said. On the day registrati­on will open at 9:30 a.m. Online registrati­on is €20 and on the day registrati­on is €25 in Rosbercon parish hall. Walkers register on the day for €10.

The event will start at Green’s Cross, Shambough Lower.

Walkers will start at 11:15 a.m. and runners take off at 12 p.m. The prize structure is: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Male and Female, 1st Junior Male and Female, 1st O40, O45, O50, O60 Male and Female, 1st Team Prizes Male and Female, but excludes any individual prize winners.

Lots of spot prizes also. The run will be a great way of having a close up look at the constructi­on of the Barrow Bridge.
