Brand new look for the camogie scene

June 1979

-

In a determined bid to boost their ailing senior championship, the Wexford County Camogie Board have initiated a brand new format for this year’s competition.

For the first time, they will introduce district teams into the senior championship, and it is hoped that this will generate much-needed and renewed interest in the grade.

The senior championship has been dying on its feet over the past number of years due to the continued absolute dominance of Buffers Alley in the event.

The Alley have become so strong that it has now essentially been decided that there is no point in asking any other single club to even try to compete with them. Instead, this year’s championship will be made up of Buffers Alley themselves (the only actual club to take part), and District teams from the remainder of Gorey District, Wexford District, and Enniscorthy/New Ross District.

The four teams will play each other in a round-robin series that will involve each side getting three games, and the top two teams will then progress to the final.

Enniscorthy/New Ross District will be able to draw on players from Cloughbawn, Rathnure, and Ballindaggin. Wexford District will have the pick of The Ballagh, St. John’s, St. Ibar’s, and Glynn. The Gorey District consists of Kilrush, Clonee, and Glen/Tara.

Players in those clubs who do not make the District teams for the senior championship will be eligible to play with their club in lower grades.
