SUTHERLAND DANCERS ON TOP OF THE WORLD!
A group of local Irish dancers have been crowned World Champions after they emerged fought off stiff competition from all over the globe at the World Irish Dancing Championships in Killarney.
The dancers from Tara Academy, under the direction of Kay and Aileen Sutherland, danced a performance based around a Shrek-based theme. Having already been crowned all-Ireland Champions at an even in City West Hotel, Dublin, in May, they knew they would be up against the very best competitors in Kerry.
The cast of dancers involved are all from the academy’s local classes in Terrerath and Raheen and their very entertaining production included aspects of dance, drama and comedy.
Speaking to this newspaper Kay Sutherland said the dancers performed in exemplary fashion at the event and were delighted with their win.
‘It was a great achievement for them but no more than they deserved for all the hard work they put in,’ she said.
While the dancers are no strangers to success being crowned champions of the world takes things to an all-together different level.
The title also reflected the hard work, commitment and dedication of not just the pupils but also of their two teachers.
In addition to seeing the academy’s student achieve their success Aileen Sutherland was also placed 9th overall in the Senior Ladies championship.
Kay and Aileen have been teaching in the area for many years and are members of the organisation, Cumann Rince Naisiúnta.
