-

A MOTORCYCLIST’S survival after being thrown at speed from his vehicle on the Duncannon Line on Saturday night has been described ‘a miracle’. Kevin Toomey, a married man from the Foulksmills area, suffered two broken legs, one of which was badly crushed in the freak accident when he crashed at St Leonards. He also suffered

a broken hip, broken nose and broken collarbone, suffering other minor injuries.

It is understood he was placed in an induced coma and is undergoing extensive treatment in Waterford University Hospital.

A local resident said: ‘Everyone was shocked to hear about what happened Kevin. It’s a miracle he survived; it took almost ten minutes to find him in a field near the scene. He was out for a spin with two friends and wh at happened was a freak accident. He is a proper gentleman and is in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.’

A talented carpenter Kevin makes fitted kitchens, running his own business.

New Ross Superintendent John McDonald said: ‘He was thrown from his vehicle and was found in a nearby field having been catapulted over a ditch.’

Kevin suffered serious injuries to his lower body and was assessed by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Waterford University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where he remains.

Another motorcyclist is understood to have been travelling with the man, but he was not in any accident.

‘It is unclear what happened. There was a lot of debris,’ Supt McDonald said.

The main Duncannon Line road was closed while garda forensic investigators carried out examinations to determine the cause of the accident, which people first arriving on the scene feared could have been fatal.

Supt McDonald said gardaí have not been updated as to what the man’s condition is.
