Cubs get involved in bee-friendly planting
MEMBERS of the 1st Wexford New Ross Cubs were invited to the town park in New Ross where they got to participate in a ‘bee-friendly’ planting project in conjunction with the local Tidy Towns committee.
The aim of the initiative was to give the cubs the opportunity to plant some new summer season flowers and shrubs in Pearse Park while ensuring they were beneficial to the bees.
The Tidy Towns committee has done a lot of work in recent times around New Ross, including in the town park, to ensure it looks as aesthetically pleasing as possible for visitors and locals.
However, the ‘bee-friendly planting’ initiative was educational for the participants as well as being beneficial for the town.
The cubs were delighted to get the opportunity to sow new plants in the park and the Tidy Towns committee was very complimentary with regard to how the children approached the task.
They said the children showed great enthusiasm and interest in relation to what was being planted and why they will be of value to bees.
The children helped plant lavender and geraniums in the town park and they were accompanied by their leaders and Derek Furness help with the digging.
It was the second year doing that the collaboration took place and it’s hoped the garden will expand again next year.
