There was great news from our Barton Cup side as they defeated Killiney on a 3.5 to 1.5 score. We have now reached the semi-final of this prestigious competition and will be playing Baltinglass in the next three weeks.
Split The Pot was won by the Saturday regulars who collected €93. The next draw will take place on Tuesday, July 10.

Our lady Captain Maeve’s day was held in absolutely superb weather. A huge crowd participated in both the ladies’ and men’s sections.
We had a great turn-out on the night which was really appreciated by Maeve’s family who had travelled from Thurles to be with Pascal and Claire. The clubhouse provided a beautiful meal and music was performed by Adeline Foxe.
Thank you to all the volunteers, both ladies and men, bar staff, catering staff and course staff who helped to make this event a great success. Congratulations to all the prize-winners and let us continue to enjoy walking the fairways for 2018.

NEW ROSS SENIORS
Despite the prevailing heatwave, we had a great turn-out of 13 teams on Thursday. It was slightly overcast and not too warm for the duration of play, but temperatures rose rapidly in the afternoon.
There is always a joker or jokers among the selected teams and so it was when Johnny Browne (13), Michael Kavanagh (15), Tony Wallace (22) and Aidan Wallace (27) ran away from the rest of the field with a fantastic final score of 106 points to easily claim first prize.
A three-person team composed of Patsy Farrell (20), John F. Roche (21) and Jim Kehoe (25) were second with 99 points (93+6), whilst Tony Harford (13), John O’Gara (18), Frank Boyle (23) and Martin Burke (26) were third with 95 points after a countback over the last nine holes (49/48).
Only one nearest the pin prize was won, by Eamon Delaney on the eleventh hole.
We have no game next Thursday as it is the Meals on Wheels charity day, but we resume as normal the following Thursday, July 19.
On that day we will collect the all-in fee (€20) for our eagerly awaited trip to Faithlegg G.C. on Tuesday, July 31. All intending to travel are requested to bring the entry fee with them in order to avoid any last-minute hitches trying to collect the green fees money.

The Gate Golf Society held their fourth outing on Saturday at Castlecomer Golf Club. We want to thank the club for all their help, and the sponsors were Heineken Lager to whom we are very grateful.

ROSSLARE
Two competitions were played in Rosslare during the past week. Despite plenty of run on the fairways and perfect greens, players are finding it hard to score with no competitor breaking 40 points in either competition.
On Sunday week Dermot Walsh (7) had birdies at the fourth, twelfth and 13th in halves of 18 and 21 to win the singles.
Second, also on 39 points, was Murt Joyce (7), with the recent Captain’s prize winner, Toddy Murphy (19), taking third position on the same score.
Gary Collins (+3) won the gross on 34 and Syl Farrell (13) took the veterans’ prize with 37 points. First nine winner was Cormac Pettitt (11) with 22 points, and the second nine was won by Bob Quilty (10) with 21 points.
The open singles on Wednesday was won by one of our new members, better known as a hurler and footballer, Michael O’Regan (18). Despite scoring no point at the twelfth, his halves of 17 and 21 points won on the breakdown from Douglas Benson (14).
Third on the same score was the evergreen Hugh Byrne (15), with Paddy Gallagher (16) fourth on 37 points.
John Brady (+2), fresh from his selection on the Irish boys’ team, won the gross with 37 points. He had four birdies in his round. Tony Wright (12) won the vets. on 36 points.

WEXFORD LADIES
To coincide with Captain’s day on Sunday, July 1, there was a nine-hole singles stableford competition for the ladies sponsored by the Captain, Jack Lynn.
The honours went to lady Captain Patricia Hanton (10) with 20 points, and Irene Bolger (4) was second with 19 points (back nine).
On Monday, July 2, to kick off open week, there was an open mixed fourball competition organised by the ladies’ section and sponsored by Hynes Jewellers.
This competition attracted a high number of members and visitors from Rosslare, New Ross, Enniscorthy, Bunclody, Craddockstown and Beech Park. We’d like to thank all the participants for their support.

With the continuing dry sunny conditions, some ladies were heard to comment that it was ‘just like playing in Spain’ on Thursday. There was a fantastic turn-out for this open 18-hole singles stableford competition sponsored by Shoe Style International.
A total of 93 ladies from nine different clubs took to the dry fairways in a high-scoring and closely-fought competition.

Nearest the pin was Peggy Gleeson from Milltown with 3m 25cms. The C.S.S. was 72 (36), and the visiting clubs represented were Rosslare, Cregmoor Park, New Ross, Longford, Courtown, Enniscorthy, Tipperary and Milltown.
Well done to all participants and once again thank you for your support. Hard luck to all the ladies also on 39 points and 38 points who missed out this time, but there was plenty of handicap adjustments at the end of the day.
A special shout out to Geraldine Broaders! Although not in the prizes last week, she had a great round of golf.
Next week’s competition is an 18-hole two-person team event sponsored by Selskar Pharmacy with two scores to count on par threes, and one score on par fours and par fives.

TAGHMON SOCIETY
The society went to Wexford G.C. on May 26 on a windy and cool day where 40 players battled the blustery conditions.
Due to prior commitments in the afternoon, the eventual winner had to play early at 6.30 a.m., and if we had known that it was going to be the winning score (finished before the rest of us started), then we need not have bothered!
It was a case of the early bird getting the worm. In this case it definitely was a bird, our very own prize turkey, our Joe.

The next outing is in Faithlegg G.C. on July 28 starting at 11 a.m., and it is Captain Rorys’ big day, the one everyone wants to win.
It’s his old home course but there’s no advantage to be had seeing as he cannot win his own prize, but it is the day of his golfing comeback after the recent operation.
Our homebase pub proprietor, Dolores Sydney of Alice Brady’s pub in Main Street, Taghmon, is sponsor, and the Captain’s dinner will be held in The Country Bistro, Taghmon, at 7.30 p.m.
