Call for a memorial to Garda Seamus Quaid
AN APPEAL was made for a memorial event to Detective Seamus Quaid, who was killed in a quarry outside Wexford town in October 1980, after the Freedom of the City was posthumously awarded to Det Gerry McCabe in his native Limerick City in late June.
Garda Quaid, pictured right, was killed by IRA man Peter Rogers on October 13, 1980, at Ballyconnick quarry, a murder which was the focus of a Garda Ar Lar programme.
Rogers shot Garda Quaid after he was stopped at a routine night-time checkpoint and explosives were found in the back of his van.
A second Garda, Donal Lyttleton, survived the attack.
‘We, in Wexford, suffered similar consequences from the Atrocities only a few miles from this chamber. I proposed that we extend our congratulations to Limerick City Council,’ said Cllr Jim Moore, garnering support from all members.
