NEW ROSS SENIORS

With no team game on Thursday due to the Meals on Wheels outing, members are champing at the bit to get going again this week.

A great run on the ball in these parched conditions is leading to some fantastic scores being recorded. If you don’t shoot a hundred points now, chances are you will not figure in the prizes.

All players please note that we will take the names of those wishing to travel and the all-in entry fee of €20 for our trip to Faithlegg Golf Club on Tuesday, July 31. Your kind co-operation in this matter would be much appreciated as we need to have our teams finalised in good time for this eagerly-awaited outing on this magnificent course by the banks of the Suir.

Also, anyone wishing to travel on our two-day trip to Ballykisteen in September, our third year going, should give their names to Jamesie Murphy as soon as possible in order to organise booking arrangements with the hotel.

The all-in package costing only €149 for two nights B&B, two dinners and two rounds of golf must surely be the ‘sale of the century’, so why not avail of it?

COURTOWN

It is all about the Captain’s prize (Niall Nolan) this week and, as usual when there is a Captain’s prize involved, there is bound to be some great golf played.

The day belonged to Paul Kavanagh who had returned a fantastic round of 66 nett on day one of the qualifiers and continued with great golf on Saturday to claim Niall’s prize.

The course yielded some brilliant scores on both weekends and John Bolger Jnr., a young man playing off scratch, equalled the course record on day one when he shot a 67 gross.

He had a bogey five on the 16th, and only for that little blip we would have had a new course record.

Once again our greenkeeper, James Timmins, and his staff had the whole course looking and playing great despite the obvious lack of rain. Niall thanked James and all concerned for their continued work on the course and grounds.

The presentation of prizes took place in the clubhouse on Saturday evening, and this was followed by a great night’s entertainment which continued on until the late hours.

The Gorey Guardian summer series continues each Wednesday, and next Saturday we will have a ladies’ and gents’ singles sponsored by French’s Bar. On Sunday there will be a gents’ fourball and ladies’ singles.

Next Tuesday it will once again be the ladies’ turn to shine when they play day one of the lady Captain’s prize (Catherine Quinn). The final day will be played on Saturday, July 28.

We take this opportunity to wish Catherine and all the ladies well when they take to the fairways.
