SUCCESSFUL FIELD DAY

An attractive program of events, and the fine weather, contributed to what turned out to be a very successful field day in aid of parochial purposes that took place in Newbawn Community Sportsground on Sunday, July 8. Traditionally known as the ‘ second Sunday’ it has always been considered as a special occasion in the Newbawn/Carrigbyrne region dating back to pagan times.

On Sunday last a feature was the tribute to the late Tom White, who passed away in February 2007 at the age of 86. Tom was always a master craftsman, so that when he retired as garage owner in the center of Newbawn village he turned his hands to making uileann pipes and other musical instruments. He was also a noted musician who performed on stage throughout County Wexford, and at Fleadh and Féile throughout the country.

Musicians such as Martin Connolly (Glenmore) Michael Sinnott (Foulkrsmills) Mary King (Campile) and Jim Murphy (Knoxtown Clonroche) all of whom played with Tom, and many others who learned from his music or played his instruments, provided some very enjoyable entertainment for those in attendance on Sunday. Well Known ballad singer Paddy Berry delivered an oration on toms life and times, and also gave a fine rendering of the well known local ballad ‘Ballyshannon lane’. A ceile band from New Ross also made a fine contribution to the afternoon entertainment with a selection of well known marches and slow airs.

The display of vintage tractors, cars, and old machinery, also proved to be a good attraction for the older generation, while the children were kept occupied with the bouncy castle and slides, along with their participation in various sports and competitions. Side shows including a bric-àbrac stall, were in abundance for young and old, while tea and other refreshments including strawberries and cream were also served. Well done to all concerned.

SPLIT-THE-POT

Congratulations and well done to Josie Colfer from Taghnon (formerly Josie Doyle from Camross) whose name was pulled from the hat at Foleys of Newbawn on Thursday night last to win €377 in the local ‘split-the-pot ‘event. Well done also to Liam Gill, Kilbraney, who won over €200 the previous week.

The next ‘split-the-pot draw will take place in Frank Doyle’s pub known as Foleys of Newbawn on Thursday, July 26, at 9 p.m.
