Win ends poor season

WEXFORD MEATH 4-14 1-10

WEXFORD ENDED their injury-plagued season in St. Patrick’s Park on Sunday with their only victory of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior camogie championship season against last year’s Intermediate champions, Meath.

Martin Carey’s side won just four times in eleven games this term - against Tipperary and Offaly in the league and against Meath twice, including the Leinster championship meeting - and lost the rest.

This was the fourth of those wins and it started in impressive fashion when Joanne Dillon found the back of the net. Stacey Kehoe and Anais Curran both had points on the board as Wexford moved 1-2 to 0-1 ahead.

Jackie Quigley picked off a classy point but Meath pulled within one after Jane Dolan chipped away at the lead with a string of points.

However, Joanne Dillon netted for the second time before the break and Linda Bolger notched a single to see the hosts in 2-5 to 0-6 at the interval.

Bolger opened the second-half with a quickly-taken point, and when Anais Curran sent a lovely pass to her, she found the Meath net in the 34th minte. The visitors’ Amy Gaffney replied with a point before Joanne Dillon popped one over at the other end.

Caroline Dillon added free for Meath but it was cancelled by a Linda Bolger ‘45. Shelley Kehoe pointed from play, only for a defensive mistake at the other end to cost Wexford a 45th-minute Caroline Quinn goal (3-9 to 1-8).

After Stacey Kehoe traded minors with Aine Keogh, Wexford pushed on and Shelley Kehoe added two from play before Joanne Dillon netted her hat-trick goal with a minute left on the clock.

The Rathgarogue-Cushinstown clubwoman almost notched her fourth major but she was denied late on as Wexford claimed their only win of the championship.
