NEW ROSS SENIORS

The weather was hot, and the scoring was extra hot - that was the story emanating from our outing on Thursday.

As always, the craic was mighty with twelve teams enjoying themselves as per usual in the champagne scramble which no doubt gives ultimate enjoyment to so many short hitters who otherwise would be labouring on the course.

With a great run on the ball, high scores were expected and that was precisely what happened. All of the twelve teams recorded scores above the mid-90 point mark but the runaway winners clocked up a fantastic 107 points

They were John Fitzpatrick (19), Martin Forristal (20), Patsy Farrell (20) and Tom O’Shea (24).

Second on 101 points came John Hosey (14), John Kennedy (16), Willie Byrne (16) and Tom Kent (26), whilst Tony Harford (14), Willie Kelly (19), Aidan O’Connor (20) and Les Jastrebski finished third with 99 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Long on the ninth hole and Richie Aylward on the eleventh.

Next Thursday, July 26, is the club monthly open champagne scramble and booking is online.

Many congratulations to our esteemed Seniors colleague, Billy Redmond, who recently won a prestigious club competition, beating all-comers to claim the prize. Well done Billy.

TAGHMON SOCIETY

The society went to Rathsallagh G.C. on June 23 on a boiler of a day where 49 players battled the sahara-like conditions.

Sun tan lotion and copious drinks plus fly spray were all required. To say it was hot was an understatement, and many pairs of dodgy looking legs appeared out from shorts.

It was always going to be a long walk around and so it proved to be, with everyone taking over five hours to complete the course. The Lord of the Flies turned out to be Matthew Doyle, well done young man.

Results: 1, Matthew Doyle (16), 39 (back nine); 2, Wesley Ruttle (22), 39 (back six); 3, Frank Kennedy (17), 39; Cat. 1, Noel Kendrick (14), 39; Cat. 2, John Walsh (16), 38; Cat. 3, Eddie Cousins (23), 35; front nine, Eamonn Roche (28), 22; back nine, Edward Cousins (5), 21; nearest the pin (eleventh), Matthew Doyle, 21’4”; visitor, Thomas Furlong, picking up three sets of balls.

There was two winners of the twos club, Edward Cousins and Larry Curtin, making a comeback, who each received €45.

As you all know, we are heading for The Heritage Golf Resort in September for a long overdue weekend away. Deposits or full payments will be collected at the next outing.

There are a limited number of places so book early to avoid disappointment. The new society tee-shirts and half tops are now available to order. If you want one, contact Ballor.

The next outing is in Faithlegg G.C. on July 28, starting at 11 a.m., and it is Captain Rory’s big day, the one everyone wants to win. It’s his old home course but there’s no advantage to be had seeing as he cannot win his own prize, but it is the day of his golfing comeback after the recent operation.

Our home base pub proprietor, Dolores Sydney of Alice Brady’s pub in Main Street, Taghmon, is sponsor for the day and the Captain’s dinner will be held in The Country Bistro, Taghmon, at 7.30 p.m.

As usual, let a committee member know whether you are playing or not. Bring along a friend as a visitor.
