OPEN AIR MASS AT ST ABBAIN’S WELL.

The annual open air Mass will be held on Sunday, July 29, at 10.30 a.m. at St Abban’s Well. The entry to the well is located at the cross of Glenour. St Abban’s well is well known religious shrine throughout the South East of Ireland and one of the few wells that dates back to penal times. Steeped in historic and religious values, the well has been known to give divine assistance in the curing and healing of numerous ailments. The open air Mass has become a popular annual event, attracting young and old from all over the country. Fr Robert Nolan will be the celebrant of the Mass and will be accompanie­d by a local Folk musical group. Seating and ample parking will be provided on the day.

GLADIATOR KNIGHT PADRAIC DELANEY.

Adamstown native Padraic Delaney has a new action tv show which started on Tuesday, July 17, on the History Channel. Knightfall chronicles the mysterious but true account of the Knights Templar of the crusades. Padraic Delaney plays the role of Gawain, the expert swordsman, regarded as the greatest swordsman of the Templar Order. Padraic is son of Michael and Sheelagh Delaney, Brocurrow, and is a past student of Coláiste Abbain. His career started having attended the Beckett Centre at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated with a BA in Drama and Theatre studies in 2001. Having worked in Shakespear­ian roles in theatre and in the Irish television series Pure Mule and the Clinic he also appeared in Ken Loach’s award winning film ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’, opposite Cillian Murphy. A successful meeting of the newly formed Adamstown Tidy Towns was held in the community centre on Tuesday, July 10. The following roles were appointed: chairperso­n – Lorna Komsa, secretary – Patrica Quirke, treasurer – Paul Cullen, PRO – Anne Marie O’Shea, Committee: Séamus Bradley, Philip Rothwell, Barry Dunne, Paddy Power and MJ Booth. The first item on the agenda was to thank the Show Committee for allowing a stand at the recent 71st annual show, Thanks to all the supporters on the day who helped to raise €79.50. A petition for the completed installati­on of three street lights on the footpath to the Fairfields Estate is available for signing in Cullen’s Shop, please lend your support. The meeting concluded with the agreement of the general tidy up of the local green to be completed in the coming weeks.

Newbawn SPORTGROUN­D EVENTS

The barbecue and raffle organised by Newbawn Community Sportsgrou­nd for the newly renovated Foleys pub for after the patron on Sunday, July 15, was a good success enjoyed by many. The Sportsgrou­nd committee have organised a cabaret and raffle for the same venue on August 11 and are hoping for good support. The Newbawn parish annual field day took place in the resplenden­t looking sportsgrou­nd on July 8 and was a good success. An abundance of activity takes place in the sports ground with Gaelic games, rounders and the soccer club making regular use, while the surroundin­g walking track is also a fine amenity. Hopefully there will be good support for the cabaret and raffle on August 11.

ROCK MASS

The annual Mass at the Mass rock on the slope of Carrigbyrn­e hill will take place on Friday, July 27, at 7.30 p.m. Raheen patron. The patron in Raheen cemetery will take place on Saturday, July 28. Blessing of the graves and prayers for all deceased members of the Raheen community will commence at 6 p.m. followed by Mass in the nearby church at 6.30 p.m.

We sympathise with relatives and friends of Newbawn people who recently passed away, including Liz Dunphy on the death of her mother Catherine Frayne shillagh Co. Wicklow, and Joe Cooper on the death of his brother-in-law Martin Murphy of Curracloe.
