New Ross Historical Society will start its autumn series of lectures on August 30, entitled ‘Savannah’ by Msgr William Oliver O’Neill, VG. Pastor Emeritus, Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Savannah, USA.

This lecture traces the Irish immigrant in Savannah who made this desperate journey from poverty in the 19th century. Tens of thousands of the Irish, including whole families, sailed on the original Dunbrody and its sister ships from New Ross to a new world. Savannah was then the preferred destinatio­n port of North America until the American civil war period.

This lecture takes place at the Dunbrody visitors centre on the quay at 8 p.m. Members and students are free, non-members pay €5. Everyone is welcome.

Participan­ts will be given a kit consisting of a touch screen display, a small computer board and various other electronic components – along with a detailed set of instructio­ns.

Participan­ts will then personalis­e their game console by modifying some of the game characters. This workshop is designed for children aged 7 -10 years.

There will be two sessions available on the day, 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. till 4.45 p.m.
