ONE of the joys of living in the country is never knowing who or what you will meet on the road.

On Sunday, September 30, motorists in the Hook area are likely to meet all manner of vehicles and characters participating an all vehicle road run across the Ring of Hook.

Organised by the St Kearns Rowing Club in conjunction with the Saltmills and St. Kearns Community Group, motor enthusiasts from near and far are welcome to join the fun.

Registration starts at the Vine Cottage Bar in Saltmills at 10 a.m. and the convoy of vehicles will leave Saltmills at 11 a.m. and make their around the Ring of Hook.

The troops will have one scheduled stop at Templars Inn for soup and sandwiches before returning to Saltmills – where a hot meal of sausages and colcannon will be available in the Colclough Memorial Hall.

All food is included in the entry fee of €20 per vehicle.

All proceeds from this event are in aid of the St Kearns Rowing Club and the Saltmills and St Kearns Community Group.

Martina Chapman, PR Officer for Saltmills and St Kearns Community Group Martina Chapman said the club is an integral part of the local community.

‘ The St Kearns Rowing Club has over 60 members and most are under the age of 16.

‘It is an essential local facility for people of all ages, but especially for the younger members of the community.

‘ The club supports the competitive needs of club members with regular training and has secured success at many regattas and competitions.

‘Equally important is the sense of inclusion and well-being that is fostered as part of its leisure and long-distance rows providing club members with alternative, non-competitive, rowing experiences such as the recent 22-mile Great River Row up the Thames in London.’

Chairman of St. Kearns Rowing Club Peter Mullans said: ‘Our commitment to the local community is reflected in our growing club numbers and activities.

‘We would like to thank the local community for supporting this road run in the past and helping us to continue to develop the club and the club members.

‘With our shared community values, it makes sense for us to work in conjunction with our neighbours in the Saltmills and St Kearns Community Group this year and we hope this will make the event even bigger and better than last year.’

The Saltmills and St Kearns Community Group is a voluntary community group created to provide an inclusive and creative forum for the support and enhancement of community initiatives.

In particular the group aims to preserve social history, foster social inclusion and facilitate community projects that will benefit the local community and visitors.

Mick Caulfield, Vice- Chairman of the Saltmills and St. Kearns Community Group said: ‘As a voluntary group working to preserve social history and foster social inclusion, working in collaboration is very important to us.

‘We are delighted to be working with the St Kearns Rowing Club on this event and we are looking forward to a great day om Sunday.’
