LATE PAT DOYLE

The death occurred on Wednesday, September 19, of Pat Doyle from Glenpipe Tullogher in his 92nd year. Pat was a native of Bawnskeha Thomastown but moved to Glenpipe on his marriage to Biddy Walsh. He was a hard-working member of the farming community and was a well-liked and a popular figure in the area. Pat took great interest in all the happenings in the locality and was an avid fan of the local hurling team and also the Kilkenny hurlers whom he saw record many all-Ireland victories in his lifetime.

After being waked in the family home his remains were removed on Friday morning to St David’s Church Listerlin for Requiem Mass after which he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Pre-deceased by his wife, Biddy, only six short months ago, Pat is survived by his sons, Eddie, Larry and Pat, daughters, Mary and Margaret, sister, Maureen, sonsin-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and a large circle of friends and neighbours to whom sincere sympathy is extended on the passing of a quiet and much respected member of our community.

EUGENE O’NEILL

The events commemorating the great American playwright, Eugene O’Neill, will take place in New Ross and Ballyneale in October. A series of the talented writer’s plays will be presented in the town and his relative, Alice O’Neill McLoughlin will give a talk in Ballyneale graveyard where Eugene’s ancestors are buried. It will be recalled that Eugene O’Neill’s father, James, left Tinneranny at a very young age and he set the trend by becoming a very successful actor in America. So, there is a lot of history there which will be brought to life by the events arranged at the various venues and it should be very interesting indeed.

THE WALSH BATTLE

In the recent Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling League game between Tullogher-Rosbercon and Tullaroan it was a battle royal between members of the Walsh clan. Lining out for Tullaroan were the multi all-Ireland winners, brothers, Tommy and Pádraig, while for Tullogher, Walter Walsh carried the mantle. At the end of a cracking game of hurling it was Tullaroan, who triumphed on a score-line of 1-20 to 0-21-a two point winning margin. Bad shooting probably cost Tullogher the game as they had 10 wides alone in the first half when aided by the breeze.

WORLD GOLD

The popular Donovan brothers from Skibereen, Paul and Garry, took the gold medals at the World Rowing Championships in Hungary with another powerful display. In doing so, their greatest fan and near relative, Mrs Rita Dooley from Hoodsgrove was thrilled and it is said she willed their boat all the way to the finish line perhaps helping with a prayer or two as well.

ROSBERCON UNITED

Rosbercon United 6-1 Ballagh United: It was more away day joy for Rosbercon United as they got back to winning ways with a 6-1 win over Ballagh United.

Travelling with a strong squad of 18 players, Rosbercon never looked in danger throughout the contest with Jamie St Ledger striking midway through the first half and Kevin Doyle adding a second from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

The second half was much of the same with Rosbercon doing most of the pressing. A great example of building from the back with quick precision passing concluded with an excellent Barry Ryan header to the bottom corner. With one of the strongest benches we have seen, Rosbercon rang in the changes with Philip O’Connor and Paul Manning stepping off the bench to add goals 4 and five respectively after Ballagh had grabbed a goal back. The scoring was rounded off by Jamie St Ledger from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game to give Rosbercon a comprehensive 6-1 win and another three points, that sees the lads on top of the table via their superior goal difference.
