FIFA 19 a welcome, if not incredibe improvement
DEATH, taxes and FIFA. Another year, another iterative update to the world’s most popular and longest-running football simulation game.
It should go without saying at this point that the latest FIFA doesn’t reinvent the old formula in any way, rather adding a plethora of minor refinements and additions that lend to an improved gameplay experience.
The most notable gameplay addition comes in the form of precision ball control. Used effectively, this feature can be used to create subtle on-the-ball movements, transforming dribbling from a janky hobble to silky smooth movements more representative of the star-studded players executing them.
Finishing has also been modified, with an odd mechanic introduced that affords players a tiny window of opportunity to press the shot button again after taking the initial shot. If you time this to perfection, the player will strike the ball like a rocket, heavily adding to the odds of scoring from the shot. A completely unnecessary feature with a horribly balanced risk-to-reward ratio. Somehow, this feature came off as an indication of just how much EA Sports are struggling to add anything both novel and worthwhile to one of the oldest blueprints in gaming.
Pass accuracy has also been modified, making the passing directions feel far less “baked in”. No more accidental laser-guided passes through three opposition players to your open player on the wing.
Possibly the greatest addition to FIFA 19 is also the most cosmetic. FIFA 19 sees the addition of the Champions League - much to the disdain of Pro Evolution devotees.
The authenticity of the competition’s depiction is incredible. From the instantly recognisable theme to the immersive graphic overlays used throughout the season, every single facet of Europe’s greatest club competition is depicted with perfect detail.
Local multiplayer players will be absolutely thrilled to see Kick- Off mode receive a decent overhaul, adding a variety of new Kick- Off modes to the game.
These modes introduce variations on the typical 90-minute football match such as Headers & Volleys, as well as the hilarious and self-explanatory No Rules mode.
FIFA 19 is a welcome, if not incredibe improvement over last year’s title. The addition of the Champions League branding and improved Kick- Off modes are particularly welcome.
