Cyclists raise €2,000 for New Ross Meals on Wheels

- By DAVID LOOBY

MEMBERS of the Marble City Cyclers Club, in particular the Listerlin volunteers, raised €2,000 for New Ross Meals On Wheels from recent cycles they organised in the area.

New Ross Meals On Wheels Secretary Colm Caulfield said: ‘We are eternally grateful to the club and we want to assure its members that we will use the funds to continue the service of the highest standards of hygiene and care to all our wonderful clients.’

The Meals on Wheels Trust with charitable status was set up 30 years ago – its main objective being to provide daily, hot nutritious meals to the infirmed, elderly, handicapped, and any people in need in the New Ross area. The service is ideal for men who have been widowed and who require freshly prepared, nutritious food delivered to them in their home.

The service is for everyone, across all economic backgrounds.

Presently more than 60 people avail of meals five days a week. A ‘drop-in’ facility is also provided for those who wish to dine on the premises or simply to collect meals for consumption later.

Apart from the provision of meals, all staff and helpers play a vital pastoral role in the lives of those they serve. All too often the person delivering the meals is the only outside contact the elderly or house-bound client might have on that day.

The centre also supplies meals to the day care workers who look after a number of the clients and call daily to collect meals for those clients and this ensures that these people get a very good, nutritious diet daily and this can contribute to them continuing to live in their homes and stay independent.

Mr Caulfield said: ‘It is hoped, not only to continue the service, but to expand the numbers availing thereof. For that purpose we take every opportunity to promote and encourage elderly in our operating area to consider availing of this wonderful service ensuring they have access to a piping hot nutritious meal every day and not having to cook such a meal especially those living alone.’

The cost of a three course meal (soup/dinner/desert) is €5. The service is only possible due to its seventy plus voluntary drivers, who assist with the delivery of the meals daily.

The centre operates to the highest possible hygiene standards and has an active health and safety program is in operation throughout the premises at all times.

A voluntary committee of six is lead and chaired by Mgr Joseph McGrath oversees the running of the project.

You can order your food at the centre on 051 445711.
