Woodsmen and Curracloe defeat Doran’s Bridge on double HORSESHOES

THE WEXFORD League Division 1 and 2 horseshoe finals were held on Saturday in the league field in Ferns.

Woodsmen beat Doran’s Bridge ‘A’ 4-1 in the Division 1 decider, with the individual results as follows: Paddy Connors and Phil Mahon (Woodsmen) beat John Joe Byrne and Richard Collier (Doran’s Bridge), 21-14; Tom Connors and John Giltrap (Woodsmen) beat Harry Kinch and John Doyle (Doran’s Bridge), 21-9; Michael Redmond and Chris McDonald (Woodsmen) beat Gavin Collier and Ciarán O’Brien, replaced by Walter Christophe­r (Doran’s Bridge), 21-6.

After a short break the next set of games commenced, with teams having an opportunit­y to change their line-up.

John Joe Byrne and John Doyle (Doran’s Bridge) beat Tom Connors and John Giltrap (Woodsmen), 21-18; Paddy Connors and Phil Mahon (Doran’s Bridge) beat Harry Kinch and Richard Collier (Doran’s Bridge), 21-18.

The Division 2 final also resulted in a 4-1 win, this time for Curracloe over Doran’s Bridge ‘B’ to make it a doubly bad day for the latter.

Results: Seán Doyle and James Jackman (Curracloe) beat Charles Christophe­r and John Kehoe (Doran’s Bridge), 21-17; Denis Larkin and Dean Collier (Doran’s Bridge) beat Philip Whitmore and Seán Byrne (Curracloe), 21-17; George Doran and Pat Furlong (Curracloe) beat Billy McGuire and Jason Collier (Doran’s Bridge), 21-20; Seán Doyle and James Jackman (Curracloe) beat Dean Collier and Denis Larkin (Doran’s Bridge), 21-19; Philip Whitmore and Seán Byrne (Curracloe) beat Billy McGuire and Charles Christophe­r, replaced by Billy Cash (Doran’s Bridge), 21-4.

A big thank you to the referees in both games: Brendan Earle and Denis Larkin Jnr. In Division 1, and Jim Sludds Snr. and James Sludds in Division 2.

Well done to both winning teams, who were far superior as the scores show. The presentati­on with food took place in Peter Doyle’s Pub, Ferns, afterwards.

There will be an open doubles tournament for turkeys on Sunday, October 28, at 2 p.m. in the league field in Ferns.
