EUGENE O’NEILL DRAMA FESTIVAL: The inaugural Eugene O’Neill Internatio­nal Festival of Theatre begins on Thursday in New Ross. Considered America’s greatest playwright by many, award-winning O’Neill, whose ancestors hailed from nearby Tinneranny, will be celebrated in the festival which runs until Sunday. O’Neill’s tale of two lonely strangers in `Hughie’ will be staged and directed as an especially re-imagined piece by Eric Hayes, artistic director of the Eugene O’Neill Foundation in Danville, California. An epic production of `Mourning Becomes Electra’ will be directed by Ben Barnes. On Sunday, Don Wycherley stars in the touching and entertaini­ng My Real Life by Wexford writer Eoin Colfer. And daily from Thursday till Sunday The Glencairn Plays will be staged on board the replica famine ship the Dunbrody. O’Neill’s cycle of one-act plays will be directed by renowned Wexford director Paul Walsh. THE FUREYS: Legends of Irish music and song The Fureys are set to take to the stage at the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorth­y this Sunday night as part of their 40th anniversar­y tour. BOOK LAUNCH: Bernie Walsh will launch her book ‘Driftwood’ in Gorey Library on Thursday, October 11, at 7 p.m. Bernie was born in Dun Laoghaire but now lives in Gorey. She is influenced greatly by Patrick Kavanagh and Yeats and has developed her own talent through time. Bernie’s work has appeared in the Wexford press, various magazines and anthologie­s. ‘Driftwood’ is her first collection of poetry and short stories.

TINTERN TRAILS RUN: The Sherry Fitzgerald Radford Tintern Abbey Trail Run takes place on Sunday at 11 a.m. on the medieval grounds of Tintern Abbey, The run takes place over two courses to choose from, a 5km and a 8km. Both courses capture the best of the stunning trails that surround Tintern Abbey. THE Presentati­on Centre in Enniscorth­y will play host to ‘The Mental’ on Friday, October 12, at 8 p.m. The play is the third in the Barrow trilogy following on from the well received Corner Boys and Lucinda. The Mental tells the story of John Salter who spent 40 years in psychiatri­c care just for doing a good deed. The play was written by John MacKenna and Directed by Angela Keogh. Lighting will be courtesy of Tom Kennedy. Tickets for the show are available from the Presentati­on Centre on the night and also from Wexford Arts Centre at 053 9123764.

THE Culture Night DJs party will take place in Wexford Arts Centre on Friday, October 12, at 8 p.m. Culture was set up by two local DJs in 2016. The aim of the night is to bring various types of house music and techno to Wexford. This is the fifth instalment of the initiative in Wexford Arts Centre and it promises to be a great night. Previous performers have included Tommy Holohan and Ceílí in addition to local techno duo 1992. For this gig, 1992 will return and they will be joined by Niall Roche and multiple DJ techniques will be displayed. Tickets are available from Wexford Arts Centre at 053 9123764.

BATTLE FOR SEATTLE: Fans of grunge music can look forward to a big night of music in the Crown Live on Saturday as two bands with two full sets go head to head. The Year Grunge Broke is the definitive Soundgarde­n/ Temple of the Dog/Audioslave tribute band, commemorat­ing one of rock music’s greatest voices and front men, Chris Cornell. Meanwhile, Paradox are not only an incredible original band but also one of the finest Nirvana tribute bands on the circuit, recreating the iconic voice of the Kurt Cobain fronted band who left a trail blazing mark on music in the 1990s that is still drawing influence today.
