With the nights closing in fast more and more patrons are frequenting the bingo in Rosbercon Parish Hall. Recently in the lotto game run in conjunction with the bingo Cliff Bennett was the winner of the jackpot which netted him the tidy sum of €1,700. The new jackpot now stands at €225 and you can play for that any Wednesday night at the bingo which starts at 8.30 p.m.

THE BRIDGE

There have been many comments in the ‘Standard’ in the past few weeks over the naming of the new bridge in the New Ross By-Pass due to open in 2019. Officially to be called the ‘ Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge’, this is a name that locals feel will never be used when referring to its title. Instead, general consensus is that it will be called the bridge at the Pink Rock or the Pink Rock Bridge where incidentally a vast part of that rocky structure has been excavated in the building of the bridge.

As one correspondent in the ‘Standard’ last week commented who knows the official name of the Waterford ByPass Bridge, it always being referred to as ‘The Toll Bridge’. Likewise, our bridge from Rosbercon to New Ross (The O’Hanrahan Bridge), is rarely called that, instead the general public refer to it as ‘The Bridge’. Keep it simple might be the best motto in these situations.

TIDY TOWNS

Personnel and staff from Kilkenny County Council will attend and provide information, support, and assistance if forming a tidy Town’s Group to enter the competition in 2019.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The South Kilkenny Historical Society played host to the launch of Eoin Swithin Walsh’s book, ‘Kilkenny in Times of Revolution-1900-1923’ in Mooncoin Hall last Friday evening.

A big crowd attended and the author gave a brief resume of the events which the book refers to, mainly dealing with happenings in the War of Independence where two local men, Seán Hartley from Glenmore and Nicholas Mullins from Thomastown, lost their lives in the ambush against British Forces at Coolbawn (Castlecomer).
