WEXFORD Lions Club has expressed delight with the success of its carers’ weekend that was held at Ballyvaloo Retreat Centre.

The event took place over three days with the first night being comprised of registration and an official opening by Cllr Tony Dempsey on behalf of Wexford County Council.

Following the registration those in attendance got a lovely meal and were entertained by Shane Dunphy and Kevin McDermott.

The following morning motivational speaker, Sheila Bent, gave an inspiring talk about the importance of ensuring that carers look after themselves.

Marian Mahon, the National Carers Association Support Manager, also spoke at the event and highlighted what the organisation is doing nationally to lobby on behalf of carers nationwide.

Those present were also given the opportunity to avail of one-to-one sessions with counsellors if they wished and also reflexologists and beauticians.

There was also a fashion show and people were given advice on the best type of clothes to wear to suit their respective size and shape.

The District Governor of the Lions’ Club of Ireland, Frank O’Donohue, said he was very impressed by the facilities at Ballyvaloo.

Local musicians provided entertainment on Saturday evening and there was also a bingo session for people to enjoy.

Sunday morning saw the carers avail of mass and Fr Brendan Nolan gave them a blessing. He also gave a sermon specifically tailored towards the weekend that was in it.

The programme of events culminated with Fintan Ellard performing some songs.

Commenting on the weekend to this newspaper Gabrielle Willis, the Chairperson of Wexford Lions Club, said it was a fantastic initiative that everyone in attendance benefited from.

‘At the beginning of the weekend some of the people were nervous and you could see that but they soon got to know others there and friendships were forged,’ she said.

‘It’s important that carers know they are not alone and that there are other people out there under the same type of pressure,’ she added.

‘ The carers’ weekend is a very special event and it’s definitely one of the best ones we do.’

Ms Willis acknowledged the people who helped make the weekend a success including Triona Barnes who, along with herself, remained on-site throughout the entire weekend.

‘Members from different areas joined us over the weekend to help out too and we would like to thank everyone who assisted,’ said Ms Willis.
