Where Davy Fitzgerald goes, the crowd follows...
A HUGE crowd queued for hours at Wexford Book Centre on the Bank Holiday weekend for the chance to meet Wexford Hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald, and pick up their copy of his book ‘At All Costs’.
The queue started early in the day and snaked through the book store and out onto the street where the crowd waited patiently and cheered when the man of the moment arrived.
Fitzgerald, a three time All Ireland winner with his native county Clare - twice as a player (1995, 1997) and once as a manager (2013) - is taking charge of Wexford for his third season but is on the promotion drive for his tell-all biography during the down time.
Since taking over the Wexford hurlers, the county has secured promotion from Division 2, reached its first Leinster Final in nine years, and competed in the All Ireland Quarter Finals in 2017.
His popularity was plain to see on Saturday as he greeted fans, young and old, signing books and posing for photographs.
The book has been described as a ‘raw and surprisingly vulnerable account of his life in hurling’, in which the colourful GAA star confronts his legacy, his fiery reputation, and the most enduring controversies of his career, all the while considering the cost pursuit of victory had taken.
The book had been launched previously so Saturday was all about meeting the fans, who came in their droves. The event started at 3 p.m. but it was after closing time before the Clare man was able to make an exit.
