Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s to host star-studded GAA charity night

- By DAVID LOOBY

THE Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s Coiste na nÓg section are hosting an event featuring a galaxy of GAA legends this Friday at 8 p.m. in the Brandon House Hotel.

Like every GAA club catering for young people in this country, Geraldine’s volunteers are all go on a 24/7 basis, 12 months a year.

Club chairman Pat Wickham said: ‘ The aim of the club is as always to not just promote our Gaelic games of hurling and football, but also to bring youngsters together in a safe environment to give them a sense of fun and make friends and keep them active and fit. The upside of this is the pleasure and craic achieved by both parents and mentors of the club, but like everything in life there is a reality to it and that reality in most clubs nowadays is the ongoing issue of finance be it money for hurls, footballs, jerseys, helmets, buses, medals etc.’

On coming in as Chairman and Secretary of the club in 2018 Pat Wickham and Geraldine Ryan were faced with operating the club on a budget that was more or less non existent, but thanks to parents helping out with transport and money through membership they have covered most expenses during the season with teams competing from U-7 to U-17 age groups in both codes. The club even sponsored the local school with gear bags for their Rackard League final earlier in the year.

However the Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s are now faced with a carry-over into 2019 of a four figure bill for hurls alone and with this in mind, and also the year ahead, they have decided to organise this entertaining night in the Brandon House Hotel on Friday, November 30, at 8 p.m.

They are hoping to have an audience of 400 people who will sit and listen and ask question to a star-studded line-up which includes Davy Fitzgerald, Richie Power, Mark Fanning and Walter Walsh.

Tickets are also available from Geraldine Ryan’s coffee shop O’Riain’s in the Irishtown, New Ross.

‘ This is a huge venture for a club with big ambitions to get their under-age structures in place to bring out the best in the town’s young kids and get them back up and proud to represent the Geraldine O Hanrahan’s so the club is appealing to its members and the wider community to come out and relax and take in a good night’s fun and entertainment among a star-studded line-up. At €20 a ticket you will get full value for money.’
