Convicted of speeding offence Lifebuoys checked regularly at our beaches following major storms
MICHAEL QUINN (52) from Schoolhouse Road, Rosbercon in New Ross was handed a speeding conviction when he attended Wexford District Court last week.
He was detected driving at 73 km/h in December of last year at Bosheen Road in New Ross where a 50 km/h limit is enforced.
A fine of €200 was imposed by Judge Gerard Haughton once Quinn produced his driving licence. LIFEBUOYS at beaches across the district are checked every one or two weeks.
Speaking at the monthly meeting of New Ross Municipal district council, Cllr Martin Murphy said three stanchions holding lifebuoys at a local beach have been knocked over by storms.
Asking if there is an annual review of life buoys and coastal infrastructure, Cllr Murphy said it is important for lifebuoys to be in place.
Environmental officer with Wexford County Council Eoin Byrne said there are 250 ring lifebuoys across the county. He said the stakes on which they hang are going to be moved further back from the beach.
‘ They are checked every week or second week. The crew take a pic to ensure the rope is tied properly and that everything is in place. Eight to ten (life buoys) were reported missing over the last couple of weeks). If there is something missing, it’s replaced straight away,’ he said.
Mr Byrne said members of the public rarely interfere with the buoys.
