Horeswood NS parents raise €12k for extension

- By DAVID LOOBY

THE Parents Association of Scoil Mhuire recently presented a cheque for €12,000 to the board of management towards the planned extension of two Special Educational Needs rooms at the school after a jersey signed by Ireland star Tadhg Furlong was raffled off with other items.

The money raised included a large amount from the draw which was held last June. When the 293 pupils of Scoil Mhuire Horeswood asked for his help, ex-pupil and International and Leinster rugby star, Tadgh Furlong, responded immediately.

The school urgently requires two Special Needs rooms to enhance the learning experience and lives of its pupils. However, despite the indisputable need, the Department of Education and Skills was unwilling to provide the required amount to complete the project, leaving the school facing a €15,000 shortfall.

That’s where Tadgh stepped in. The Irish international – currently ranked one of the best players in the world – generously donated two autographed balls and a jersey, after his return from the 2018 Six Nations Grand Slam victory; all of which were raffled - the proceeds going towards the building of the rooms.

The Parents Association wish to sincerely thank all who contributed in any way. The cheque was presented to principal Brian Flood who represented the board of management.

He said he was very grateful to the Parents Association for such a generous donation. He was also pleased to announce that work would commence on the extension in the coming days.
