Box Cup a success

International flavour adds to weekend

-

THE WEXFORD Box Cup had a real international flavour when run over three days at the St. Joseph’s club in Wexford town.

Organised by St. Ibar’s Boxing Club in Wexford town, and Sacre Coeur from Enniscorthy, the event is in its second year and attracted some 350 boxers for the three-day under-age tournament staged from a Friday to Sunday recently.

Such was the success of the initial tournament last year that clubs from England and Scotland, along with one team from Canada, joined with sides from the four Irish provinces, while all County Wexford clubs were also represented.

The tournament for those aged from eleven to 18 years provided some sparkling contests over the three days, and with such an international flavour to the contest, it led to some excellent match-ups, with the large attendances thoroughly enjoying the quality of boxing that was on offer.

Wexford boxers acquitted themselves excellently, coming out on top against some talented opposition, but over the three days the spoils were very evenly divided in the various weight divisions and age groups.

The best club award went to the Olympic from Mullingar, while Conor O’Donovan (Clonmel) won the best male boxer.

The best female boxer was Sierea Ezhudealsh (Citadel, Canada), while Tom Murphy (St. Ibar’s) won the best Wexford boxer award, sponsored by the recently-formed Wexford Retired Boxers’ Association.

The organising clubs were delighted with the success of the tournament, with a big thanks due to St. Joseph’s for the use of their excellent facilities over the three days.
