ST MOGUE’S GAA
The intermediate hurlers took on Kilkenny champions, Graigue Ballycallan in the Leinster semi-final in New Ross last weekend. Forced to field without Ciaran Dwyer, Bryan Power, Seán Foley and Darren Foley they found the going tough against a Ballycallan side containing a number of current and former Kilkenny senior stars. An early Mikie Dwyer goal kept Fethard in contention as they trailed by five points at the break.
They were further hampered by the loss through injury of Martin Power at the break though his replacement Jessie Foley made an impact as Fethard reduced the lead. Some earlier indecision by the referee led to a flare-up 10 minutes into the second half which saw both sides reduced to 14 men. Unfortunately, the loss of Mikie Dwyer proved a bigger loss to Fethard. However, Mark Wallace and Garrett Foley led the way as they reduced the lead to three points with 15 minutes to go. An upset looked possible but goalkeeper Kieran Furlong, who had a fine game was beaten twice in the space of a minute to give Ballycallan an unassailable lead.
Though disappointed at their loss on the day this team and their management team had a great run for the last two years bringing great excitement to the parish as was seen by the huge crowd who turned out to support them. They can now take a wellearned rest as they look forward to playing senior hurling next year.
The AGM of Fethard St Mogue’s GAA Club will take place on Friday, November 7, at 8.30 p.m. upstairs in Neville’s. Motions and nominations will be taken by sending in writing to the secretary before November 30.
