BOOST FOR THE AREA
ALDI OPENED its doors to a large crowd of eager shoppers in Graiguenamanagh on Thursday.
Providing 20 jobs, the supermarket opened after 30 months in planning after Kilkenny County Council’s original decision to grant permission was appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
Kilkenny Mayor Cllr Peter ‘ Chap’ Cleere, from nearby Skeoughvosteen, was thrilled to welcome Aldi to Graiguenmanagh. He said: ‘ There has been considerable interest and excitement in our area over the last couple of months regarding this new store opening, and the overwhelming majority of people I have spoken to are in favour of this and are absolutely delighted that this day has finally arrived. Aldi opening their doors this morning is a major boost for the area.’
Located at the Old Creamery on Main Street, the supermarket has had a very busy first few days, opening in the middle of the Christmas rush. Kevin and Katie Carrot even made a star appearance for the opening.
Cllr Cleere said: ‘ Aldi coming to Graiguenamanagh will be a huge help to those who have to travel out of town to do their shopping, meaning that more money will stay in Graiguenamanagh, with shoppers, in turn, picking up extras in the town centre. This is very much a “win-win” situation for Graiguenamanagh, as Aldi have made significant contributions to the access area around Well Lane, including new public lighting, tarmac and railings which will be a huge and welcome addition to the town.’
He said the shopping choice of residents in Graigue and its hinterland will be significantly enhanced and there are so many benefits associated with an Aldi store, including employment opportunities. ‘I would like to wish Aldi the very best of luck with their new store,’ he said.
