on what the group could do as their YSI project, she mentioned it and everyone was amazed because not many of them hadn’t heard of it. Therefore, they knew straight away what they could do their YSI project on.’

TS is a complex disorder characterized by repetitive, sudden and involuntary movements or noises called tics. Tics usually appear in childhood and their severity varies over time. Simple vocal tics include grunting, sniffing, and throat-clearing.

During their research, the students found that just like any other medical condition or life development, TS can have a significant impact on family life. People with Tourette’s may find it very difficult to write, learn, socialise or even get a job. A student with tourette’s syndrome can distract a class very easily, but they are unable to not disturb a class. Simple every day tasks such as getting dressed, brushing your teeth or even using the bathroom can be difficult for people with severe cases.

The 24-student team has highlighted the condition on local radio and are currently making an education pack for teachers in all schools to inform them about TS and how they should treat a child with TS.

They also have a brochure that they hope to get approved by the HSE. ‘We plan to put these brochures in doctor surgeries, hospitals and many other health related places.’

The group will attend the YSI Speak Out event in Kilkenny on March 29 and many other YSI events, highlighting their campaign and are targeting politicians to improve services for people with Tourettes.

‘We have produced a leaflet which we are sending to every sporting club, school and other organisations to distribute. We are also producing a short documentary on understanding TS.’

The students also plan to fundraise to provide support Cottage Autism Network Wexford as there are strong links between TS and autism.
