Driver displaying a photocopy of tax disc

-

A PHOTOCOPY of the motor tax disc issued for another vehicle failed to deceive Garda Donal Donovan, Wexford District Court was told.

Self-employed David Kavanagh, from Ballyhoo, Curracloe was driving a VW Caddy van when stopped at Ardcavan by the garda in the early hours of June 12.

What appeared to be a tax disc was exhibited in the windscreen but it proved to be a copy of the disc covering his partner’s vehicle.

It emerged that the Caddy had not been taxed since September of 2013.

The result was that the Volkswagen was impounded and that Kavanagh later had to stump up €1,300 to cover the arrears.

Solicitor Tim Cummings told the judge that the van had been off the road for two years previously.

However, the accused had failed to declare this to the gardaí. He got it up and running with a view to putting it up for sale and then put up the false disc.

He was fined €250.
