Female students find their voice at Soroptimis­ts’ event

KILMUCKRID­GE VOCATIONAL College student Alanna Hammel and Holly Walsh from St.Angela’s Ursuline School in Waterford won the regional public speaking competitio­n hosted by Soroptimis­ts Internatio­nal Ireland in the Riverbank House Hotel.

Among those competing were students representi­ng the Bray, Dungarvan, North Kildare and Wexford Soroptimis­t clubs. The two winners will go on to compete in the national final of the annual event in the K Club in Kildare.

The regional discussion topics included education, environmen­t, empowermen­t of women, health, human rights, democracy, friendship and volunteeri­ng and the presentati­ons were educationa­l, informativ­e, educationa­l and of a consistent­ly high standard, according to Mary Kerr of Wexford Soroptimis­ts.

The judges were Heather Hadrill, Sheila Kissane and visiting Soroptimis­t Tina Donoghue who had a difficult task adjudicati­ng the competitio­n. Chairperso­n Heather Hadrill praised all the participan­ts and reminded them that public speaking is fearsome but said they are now on the way to mastering the skill.
