Female students find their voice at Soroptimists’ event
KILMUCKRIDGE VOCATIONAL College student Alanna Hammel and Holly Walsh from St.Angela’s Ursuline School in Waterford won the regional public speaking competition hosted by Soroptimists International Ireland in the Riverbank House Hotel.
Among those competing were students representing the Bray, Dungarvan, North Kildare and Wexford Soroptimist clubs. The two winners will go on to compete in the national final of the annual event in the K Club in Kildare.
The regional discussion topics included education, environment, empowerment of women, health, human rights, democracy, friendship and volunteering and the presentations were educational, informative, educational and of a consistently high standard, according to Mary Kerr of Wexford Soroptimists.
The judges were Heather Hadrill, Sheila Kissane and visiting Soroptimist Tina Donoghue who had a difficult task adjudicating the competition. Chairperson Heather Hadrill praised all the participants and reminded them that public speaking is fearsome but said they are now on the way to mastering the skill.
