NEW ROSS MUSICAL SOCIETY’S annual `Bandaoke’ night of music and fun takes place on Friday, February 15, in the Theatre Tavern, New Ross.

This is an opportunity for any budding singers and karaoke lovers to sing with a live band, namely Trilogy from New Ross.

The band will provide a full playlist but requests are welcome also. There is no cover charge but all proceeds from the raffle will go towards defraying the costs of the society’s upcoming production `Funny Girl’ at St Michael’s Theatre, running from March 4 to March 9.

The award-winning musical society’s members are looking forward to presenting the 1963 musical Funny Girl which starred Barbara Streisand. Showing at the theatre at 8 p.m. nightly, this will be the society’s 51st consecutive production.

The semi-biographical plot is based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedian Fanny Brice, featuring her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein and featuring such beloved songs such as; `People’, `Sadie, Sadie’ and `Don’t Rain on My Parade’.

Derek Shannon takes the reins as director, Philip Kennedy is musical director, Anne-Marie Cooney is choreographer and Paul Malone is production manager.

Tickets cost €12 and €15 and are available from St Michael’s Theatre Box Office on 051 421255 or www. stmichaelsnewross.com. CYCLISTS from New Ross and Cork joined forces to take on 260km of the west coast, raising €7,650 for the Irish Bone Marrow Trust.

This is the ninth year the cyclists have taken to the country’s roads, each year raising thousands for different charities.

One of the cyclists, Mick Dreelan, who is from New Ross but works in Cork, said the fundraiser received great support locally.

The large group of cycling buddies, several of whom are work colleagues of Mick’s at Stryker medical plant in Cork, set off from Westport cycling along the Wild Atlantic Way into Galway city, enjoying some of the summer’s best weather.

‘It was scorching and we had to stop for refreshments along the way,’ Mick said, adding that everyone enjoyed the two day journey.

Over the past nine years the group has raised an amazing €30,000 for different charitable organisations in their annual hamper draw held in the Theatre Tavern.

Last year the money was again raised through the draw, sponsorship cards and sponsorship from Stryker. They raised the group’s biggest ever sum, €7,650 in the process. ‘It all started with cycling to Heineken Cup matches, including to Wales, and then we started cycling across Ireland. The next cycle is from Galway to Ballybunion,’ Mick said.
