CHESS AND QUIZ SUCCESSES
Well done to the Duncannon National School chess club who surpassed themselves at the Wexford Primary Schools Chess Tournament in the Brandon House on Saturday last. They had 13 players in a field of 132 children from all over the county. Aaron Ely was presented with a beautiful plaque and won second in the overall competition. Dan Nolan took home gold in the under-13, Ryan Lynch won gold under-11, Kyle Shannon won silver under-11, Gavin Freeman won silver under-10 and Thomas Nolan won gold under-eight. Well done to all our players Luke Nolan, Rebecca Colfer, Maya Shannon, Alex Ely, Conor Ennis, Kayla Butler and Ava Dillon, who all played so well for their school. Many thanks to the parents and coaches Syd and Glyn.
Also, well done to the quiz teams who were within a ‘hair’s breadth’ of winning the Credit Union Quiz. The senior team Molly Lynch, Sarah White, Aaron Ely and Dan Nolan, were leading throughout only to miss the prize in the end by two points. The junior team Kyle Shannon, Noah Burke, James Reburn and Ryan Lynch, performed very well finishing only four points behind the winners. Thank you to Martin Lyons for the coaching and to Hal and Dervella Reburn for the refreshments.

ICA NOTES
There were seventeen members in attendance at the Jan meeting of Duncannon ICA held at St Louis Day Care Centre on January 15.
All agreed that the exercise classes with Maureen Costello were a great success and would resume on Wednesday, January 23. This is an opportunity to lose a few inches or maybe some lbs. before our visit to Aldridge Lodge restaurant on February 7.
The Gem pack national competition is for a 2lb Oxford lunch loaf. The best entry at the Federation meeting on February 25 will go forward to the next round. The Federation competition is for six chocolate chip cookies and a selection of cookies were put forward for judging at the meeting. Marie’s entry was chosen as winner with Mary O’K as runner-up.
What makes a winning chocolate chip cookie you may ask? The ideal cookie according to our judges has a slightly soft centre, crisp edges, a shiny cracked top, a buttery taste and pockets of chocolate throughout.
Catherine gave an insightful talk on colour, its significance and uses in our lives. This was followed by a quiz loosely based on the talk. Colour is culture related. In our society black is used in mourning whereas in Japan it is white. The colour blue suppresses appetite; something to consider for Operation Transformation. Orange/yellow promotes appetite. Orange is associated with joy, sunshine, the tropics and high visibility. Purple denotes power, nobility, wealth and extravagance. Think of the robes used by royalty and clergy. Light purple is used in advertisements for children’s products. White is all colours of the spectrum. Black is the absence of colour.

A lovely tea with Christmas cake was served by Sarah and the raffle was won by Kathleen, Eileen, Margaret R. and Catherine. The next meeting will be held on February 12 We look forward to the judging and later tasting of the Oxford lunch loaf.
