ANOTHER BLOW FOR DUNCANNON AS THE STRAND TAVERN CLOSES

- By DAVID LOOBY

THE shock closure of the Strand Tavern in Duncannon has been described as a great pity for the area.

People were alerted to the sudden closure of the landmark business on Saturday.

The pub’s owners Hal and Dervella Reburn paid tribute to their staff and customers in a Facebook message, saying: ‘Over the past while we have given huge consideration to the future of the Strand Tavern and as a result we have decided to sell the pub. Last night we pulled the last pints and unfortunately our doors now remain closed.’

An auction for the property is due to take place on March 29.

Hook Tourism chairperson Philip Wallace said it was a great pity to see such a landmark business close in the village. ‘It’s awful to see another business close its doors. The Strand Tavern has been there going back years and years. It’s a great location and hopefully someone will take it on.’

He said Duncannon area residents are looking forward to seeing what happens with the old shop premises opposite the tavern, whose owners have planning for mixed use retail, apartments and a shop.

Philip said if Duncannon Fort was open, bringing around 25,000 visitors to the village every year, businesses like the Strand Tavern would be open today. ‘If the fort was open I don’t think there is any way businesses here would be closing,’ he said.
