Green-minded Poulfur pupils put feet before fumes
Scoil MHAODHÓIG Poulfur pupils led the way in sustainable travel last Thursday as they celebrated the launch of their Green School Travel Flag Annual plan 2018-2019.
The children arrived on buses, bikes, sharing cars with family and friends or walked, as part of a concerted effort to travel in an environmentally friendly way.
The school’s Halla Mór was ‘forty shades of green’ as the children heard of their hard work over the last 18 months, and cheered as each class received their certificates for participation in green travel initiatives.
The inaugural awards for Sustainable Travel and Classroom Conservation were awarded to fifth class and the naoinra class respectively. Both promised to keep up their great work in a bid to retain their trophies, but there is a sense of stern competition from the other classes.
It was also the inaugural performance of the school’s travel anthem ‘Carpool.’ An infectious song with a catchy chorus, many were heard humming it in the corridors for the rest of the day. The school is also midway through the Green School’s ‘Big Travel Challenge’ – an initiative taking place during February to promote a sustainable mode of transport for ten days during the month. The school have decided to pick ‘carpooling.’
Chairperson of the Green School Committee, Tommaso Hickey said: ‘ There was such a wonderful atmosphere of everybody working together to help our environment that we are looking forward to submitting our application at the end of March.’
